How long is a game current for?

When does it stop being current?

When does it become old?

When does it become a retro title?

After 5 years? 10? ... 1?

Are 1998 games retro?

Do games go straight from being current to retro? or is there a middle ground, an undefined gaming limbo where games are too old to be current, but to new to be retro?

I suppose I'm asking,

'What is Retro?'

...and just as much...

'When is Retro?'

Not at all... most fasion and trends )both clothes, look, etc..) is always referred to as retro... In the eighites, 50's retro was cool, late eighties, early ninites, 60's retro was cool... late ninites, early 2000 70's retro was cool...

Just because a title is retro, doesnt mean its bad. :)

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ??????

Thats sadder than being a Trekker...

But i bet you watch it on your normal TV, normally colour with good sound and excellent picture quality??? Even a basic modern TV cannot improve the programme you watch on it, much like an Amiga isn`t going to suddenly give flashy 3D rendered graphics of Quake III quality halfway through a game of Cannon Fodder!!!

No, just the same you enjoy the medium, but the technology you use to view this medium has advanced, however although superior, it does not detract from your enjoyment of said programme. It is merely an old programme viewed on up to date equipment.

And as long as you still enjoy it in the present, why call it retro...? its almost inferring it was inferior in the past and not up to scratch today either!.

I think we all need to get past this idea of things being retro simply because they are old. If not, then its very hypocritical to dismiss a game/film/music as being retro if you still play/watch/listen to them still in modern day 2001...

Now, excuse me whilst i have another game of INT. 3D TENNIS on my Amiga!.

Yeah, but if you enjoy playing the game now just as much as you did before, then why term it "retro"? - Why not simply take the view that it is just an older game...

Like i said, i think its more down to technology in the systems the games run on that determines how we percieve retro gaming, as technology improves then so do the games, thus making older titles appear the poor relation.

But if like me your still enjoying the oldies, then in present terms is it really retro?

I think not. Merely its just an old game that still plays like a newer one.

Ol` Biggles has a point there...

I also think a games lasting appeal is down to its accessibility, longevity and addictiveness - and this could apply to any game from year 2001 back to 1984!!!

As an example, i recently aquired two things: one was a copy of Black & White on my PC, The other was my friends old Amiga computer so that i could play my stacks of old games i never sold.
Now, whereas i`m already tiring of B&W, its a good game but very time consuming, and the odd bug and coupled with heavy micro-management is very off-putting, i am however having a whale of a time playing some older gems on the Amiga - like International 3D Tennis, The Chaos Engine, Sensible Soccer and Hired Guns to name a few!
Now, playing Amiga games nowadays is considered by some to be "Retro Gaming", but to me these games still present a challenge under the three guidelines i mentioned above, so i don`t think of these games as retro, merely as older games on an older system.

Which begs the question: Are we sure its the games that are retro, or the technology that runs them???

My money is on the latter...

Goldeneye and Super Mario 64 are not exactly called retro and yet they are knocking on 6 years old. So now deceased platforms and simplicity are the main defining points a game has to go through before it is retro. With PC games those lines are not there and so therefore unless they are text adventures or poor 2D they are never really retro. Look at Command & Conquer as an example of that. It is really quite old now, as is Worms, 1993 or 1994 were they not? But they are still current games if long in tooth as they get refered to now. But retro is a state in the eye of the player.
