The other night I was flicking through the channels, got onto Channel4, and the announcer was in the middle of saying "And now our movie premier of ..."
He said something about it being a Directors Cut, and I thought "hmm, ok, might be worth watching" so I stuck with it. Now I had no idea what to expect, or even what it was about, but I was really impressed with it. It turns out the film was called "The Big Blue" and was basically a romance/comedy thing, or something... ...but anyway it was SO GOOD. I have no idea why it appealed to me, but it really was good. So has anyone seen it? Did you enjoy it? And have you got any obscure films you've seen and thought were good but no-one's ever heard of before? Tell me about them then dammit! I'm sure Goatboy will have loads ;P
I love watching a film by accident, or for no particular reason, and then it turns out I really enjoy it - it's much more satisfying than going to see a hyped up movie, and then just thinking "yeh, it lived up to it" or "all that for that pile of rubbish?!" I think probably because you don't expect it, and can come up with your own views before anyone gets the chance to influence your opinion. Or something. =] (someone agree with me, tell me I'm not mental ;P)
Anyhow, a film released lately that has limited release was Amores Perros. I saw a poster in the humble Leytonstone station and thought, worth a look and boy was it worth a look. That film must rank along the best. I watched twice in an inner London cinema and when it was out locally. The film is still going around so catch it if you can. It's in Spanish but that doesn't matter. Has anyone seen it? It influence is clearly Tarintino but, for me, it's better than Pulp Fiction and Dogs. The film is quality, it shocks you with it's dogs fights and is moving. The script is magnificent and the storyline is just so good. Film magazines have been going on about it for a couple of months and they're not wrong.
SPOILER!
The film works three fold telling the stroy of three different people, a lower class boy who has an affair with his sister in law, an upper class model and her boyfriend and a tramp/ assasin who wants to be reunited with his daughter. The film has it all. Action, romance, heartbreaking scenarios and gut wrenching gore.
The treament of the film may seem like some wannabe film maker's crazy teenage imagination but the film is class as an entertaining movie's sense and as a filmaking arts sense. The dogs used in the film reflect the character's own character.
Anyway, watch this film.
