‘Why do I always have to spell things out for you?’ Hissed Snakeman as he snatched the man by the throat, spilling cards everywhere. Snakeman knocked away the table with his foot and proceeded to the door. He let the strange man loose from his grip and sent him scurrying for the door.
‘Bah. Why am I surrounded by idiots?’ he asked no-one in particular as his nervous goons cowered and raised their shoulders in reply.
This was getting out of hand, Snakeman thought, once he was the greatest master criminal of all time and now what was he? A card shark with a dodgy name. Never mind his ability to spit venom at 50 feet or use his extending tongue to squeeze anyone to death should he so wish. He was going to have to do something drastic, and soon.

Frank was walking through the park. He wondered if the events last week had been a dream, but knew from the news reports showing crimes being foiled by Mongoose Man that it was all true. He had wanted some fun and excitement, but the ring he’d found had brought him a bit more than that when he’d found out that it transformed him into the costumed hero. He wasn’t even in control of the strange crusader, it just ‘took over’ whenever he sensed danger, all because of the ring.
Frank walked past the tourist information centre and heard a scream. Here we go again he thought as he felt the transformation take place. Within minutes Frank had disappeared and Mongoose Man breathed a deep breath before rushing off in the direction of the screams.
“Stop there!” he said as he came across the source. A mugger was half way from parting a middle-aged lady from her bag and had been so startled by the hero appearing behind him that he stood there, petrified.
“I…I….Didn’t mean it…..you’re really real?” he stammered.
“Yes, and you are causing this lady grief. What are you going to do about it?” said Mongoose Man in a deep baritone voice.
The thief got on his knees and started to cry. “I didn’t mean it, please, I’ll lead a good life.”
“hm!” pondered Mongoose Man as he read the thoughts of the thief. “Ok. You can go. But lead a good life. Start by helping this woman up.”
The Thief got up and dried his eyes, then held out his hand gingerly to the woman, who was now in a state of shock. He turned around to say thank you to the costumed man, but he was gone.

“Bah! Mongoose Man, Mongoose Man!” shouted Snakeman as he threw a beer can at the TV screen. “I’ll show him, I’ll show all of them!”
He got out of his armchair and walked over to a table containing a scale model of the city. Flicking on a switch, he watched as a ray shot out and scorched the earth around the front of the large bank in the centre of town.

Mongoose man looked at the debris. The earth was blackened from some kind of phaser fire and there was a hole in the front of the bank. No one had dared walk away with any money though, as watching him standing there was enough of a deterrent to any thief, however stupid. Who could have done this, and how? Just then another blast of light appeared from the sky and, before he could blink, tore into a nearby lampost.
Snakeman laughed as he watched the devastation in miniature from his apartment. He aimed the laser and pressed the switch again. Another bolt of light appeared in the sky and Mongoose man rushed to help a man who had caught the brunt of a falling piece of masonry. He followed the path back to where the beam had appeared from and looked. There was no giant craft or powerful crane that could have been the source of the blast, so where was it coming from?
Mongoose man looked at his watch and pressed a few buttons, figures flashed up and plotted a trajectory for the laser. He thought for a moment, then rushed off to the hole in the bank. In a flash, he was back holding a single penny in his hand. Another blast knocked another lamp post over and it tilted towards the road, on the brink of falling.
The costumed hero looked up the road to see a school bus racing along towards the path of the falling lamp. He saw a loose power cable across the other side of the road, it spat out powerful volts of electricity, dangerously taunting the oncoming bus. Mongoose man wasted no time, he ran over to a wall and jumped up then ran along the length until he could reach the cable. As the cable spat more bright sparks, he braved them and grabbed the middle of the wires. Using it to swing across, he got the falling lamp in one hand and quickly tied the cable to it to form an arch. The bus passed underneath as the children cheered.
Quickly dropping to the floor, Mongoose Man took hold of the penny and squinted up to the sky. He aimed and swung his large hand around, launching the penny into the air, just as another blast of light started to appear in the sky.

Snakeman kept pressing the button, but the laser fizzled and a burning smell started to emanate from the machine. He quickly realised what was happening and screamed as he ran for the door. As he got there a sudden explosion rocked the building and he was thrown through the door. As he slowly got up, he noticed two police officers standing in front of him.
“You can’t take me…I didn’t even get a big fight or TV coverage….no….it’s not fair…” Snakeman wailed as the officers picked him up.
“Mongoose Man told us you’d be here. You’re coming with us” One of them said as they handcuffed and gagged him, then escorted him to the station.

Frank sat down in front of the TV, dinner on the table in front of him. The news came on and he smiled.
“Today.” Read the newsreader, “Mongoose Man saved the city from a great catastrophe, caused by the mysterious man known only as Snakeman. His plans are uncertain, but rest assured that our hero Mongoose Man had everything under control as usual.”
Snakeman buried his head in his hands as he heard the news reporter from his cell. “I’ll get you yet Mongoose Menace!” he hissed.
The news reporter continued. “In other news, a lady has got engaged to her potential mugger after he had a change of heart and helped her out. He said it was all down to Mongoose Man, who had shown him the error of his ways.”
Frank smiled again, perhaps this wasn’t so bad after all.
Mongoose man has a cult following (i.e a few people actually seem to like him) His literary origins are in the Blade Runner story, as Dan so rightly pointed out (go and read it, it's a good tale) But I have since fleshed the character out and he now has an origin story. This is the second Mongoose Man spin off story and rest assured that there will be more!
(Dan runs off screaming at this point)
It's the first one based round a super hero who came in to fight a newbie.
A newbie called Snake came in the blade runner story so mongoose man was created to destroy him.
And now he fights from too :-)
"UKCHATFORUMS USER PROFILE NO.11 - pb
In case you are wondering, pb stands for 'Prize Baron'. After all, pb has
won more prizes than anyone else, ever, in the history of competitions. In
his spare time, pb wanders round the streets in his pointy cap and flowing
cape, throwing prizes at stray dogs and the homeless. NASA estimate his
prize total at 17, but by the time you read this profile, that will have
doubled, maybe trebled. It is thought pb has no games consoles or DVD
players with which to use his prizes. Instead he uses them for coasters. "
