All right, you all know I hate these posts but they seem popular so here goes.

Many months ago (well, 7 yesterday) I purchased a Sony PlayStation 2 from the Special Reserve Discount Network. After saving for many, many months and doing a whole host of odd jobs, my brand spanking new console arrived on my doorstep on Friday 24th November in all its vertical glory. With shaking hands I carefully opened the box and gingerly eased out the black beast. I plugged her into the mains, hooked up the SCART cable. I tuned on the power switch and pressed the brilliant blue button labelled “eject”. The CD tray slid out and stopped waiting to receive its first meal. I opened the SSX case for the first time and placed the cool blue disk into the beckoning tray. Just as smoothly as it had appeared, it retracted back into the box taking with it the greatest game on the PS2.

From the very moment that I pressed the “Reset” button for the first time until I write this now I have never, ever regretted the purchase of my console, even through concerns of DVD playback, mains supplies, future support and the announcement of the GameCube. Never once did I think “Maybe I should have waited” or “I wonder how much I’ll get for it”. Never once did I think “The graphics are fantastic but it’s not as good as the PSone”. Never once did think “I wish I’d got a GameCube instead”. Never once did my confidence fail in this little black box and I have enjoyed every single second of our relationship. The PS2 is here, it’s now and it’s great. I’m sure Khazar, sxxpro, Bonus and everyone else blessed by this stallion feels the same.

Now, as you all know, I have been pretty annoyed by people slagging off the PlayStation 2 and as I’m sure most of you will agree it’s pretty pointless. The main points for their arguments are “The PS2 has no good games” and “The GameCube’s graphics are better”. Well, all I can say is wrong on both accounts.

Let’s deal with the first falsity. Here is a list of great games on the PS2 OUT NOW!

Crazy Taxi
Escape from Monkey Island
Formula One 2001
Gran Turismo 3
Le Mans 24 Hours
MTV Music Generator 2
Onimusha: Warlords
Quake 3
Rumble Racing
Shadow of Memories
Sky Odyssey
SSX
Star Wars: Starfighter
Tekken Tag Tournament
TimeSplitters
Unreal Tournament
Zone of the Enders
Plus a wealth of great PSone titles

Here’s a list of great titles coming out imminently:

Age of Empires 2
Dark Cloud
Deus Ex
Extreme G-3
G-Surfers
Half-Life
Soul Reaver 2
Twisted Metal: Black
WipEout Fusion

And here’s a list of great titles in the pipeline:

Black and White
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2
Final Fantasy x
The Getaway
Grand Theft Auto 3
Herdy Gerdy
Ico
ISS Pro Evolution 2
Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2
Metal Gear Solid 2
Motor Mayhem
Shadow Man: 2econd Coming
Silent Hill 2
Star Wars Racer Revenge 2
Smuggler’s Run 2
Space Channel 5
Spyro the Dragon 4
Tomb Raider: Next Gen
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3

And the best thing is I’ll be playing all these and more before the GameCube has even hit the shelves. The fact is the PS2 has a wealth of fantastic games and although they may not suit the tastes of Nintendo gamers they definitely suit mine. Sony: I love ‘em. They challenged convention and brought gaming to whole new levels.

Now to address the issue that the GameCube allegedly has better graphics. Now, I’ll tell you this for nothing: It doesn’t, as any tech-head will agree. The average Joe has been fooled with unclear terminology and buzzwords such as “Gecko” and “copper wires”. The fact is that the PS2 and GameCube have virtually identical abilities. They both go about it in different ways but in the end they’re final destinations are metaphorically within walking distance of each other. Now, I could go into a lengthy explanation as to why this is but it would just bore you all to death and you wouldn’t understand. The fact is that behind all these “clock speeds” and “gigaflops” they both produce about the same amount.

So, PS2 or GameCube. How did I choose? Simple. I like PlayStation games best. In my opinion they are better games and more suited to my tastes. You disagree? Fine. We’re all entitled to an opinion. If not, why did we bother with World War 2?

Wow alot of games there turbo, but as you can see they are mostly originals, i'm not saying they are not good games, but how much originality do they have??? well probably not much.

Ant you say that ZOE is quite original, well your are wrong there mate, it is taken a lot of ideas out of a not so popular cartoon series gunadam wing, but i'm thinking no one had thought of that because it was different.

Why do the games have to be original to be enjoyable. I mean, Quake 3: Revolution my be a conversion from the PC classic, but does that make it less enjoyable.

And, Dan UK, can you let me in on some of these so called 'original games' that will be available for the Gamecube for the first month. I can't think of any off the top of my head.

The Gamecube isn't out yet, PS2 is. That is what really counts at the moment. And anyway, if there are original games coming out for the Gamecube, by the time Gamecube is actually available, they may not be so original.

Bo**ocks. Metroid, Luigi's Mansion, Mario they're all sequels. Within a months release?? I don't think so. Give me a list of GC games to be released and I'll point out the 'original' games.

Nah, there are loads of new games on PS2. Not all sequels, not by a long shot.

I expect the GC will be all the previous Ninty consoles 'on steroids.'

Ant, that was 5 out of about 60 atleast.

The PS2 is a great machine but it hasn't really broken any boundaries.

It's a PSOne on Steroids.

Very few original games. That doesn't make them bad,

So, what would you class as 'original', then?? Mario??

Everything's been done!! Out of the 7 PS2 games I have, 5 of them aren't sequels.

Red Faction (a brill game), ZOE (superb, and quite original), Smugglers Run (original as well, nice ideas), Shadow Of Memories (defintely original) and StarFighter (okay, not original, but still a superb game.)

And one of my others is a F1 game-not a sequel!

I completely agree Turbo, I feel exactly the same way (Ant waits for stupid, 'funny' replies, which he always gets when he posts seriously*

And don't forget Red Faction-it's brilliant!!

If you're satisfied with them as great games then fair enough although I wouldn't have said

"They challenged convention and brought gaming to whole new levels."

After all, most of those games on your list, no matter how good are either sequels or conversions.

Very few original games. That doesn't make them bad, they're still first class games but most of them are hradly revolutionary.

And if the PS2 is supposedly as powerful as the Gamecube (as some rare obsecure sites, that Bonus spends hours looking for, seem to say) then there wouldn't be the gap between game quality.

If anyone can be bothered to watch through an hour of Game clip on Game Network channel they would see that most PS2 games are pretty rough (the average ones) the better ones look pretty neat but the Gamecube clips still look smoother and better.

Perhaps it's because people are finding it impossible to make top quality games on Sony's black box...

I don't play my PS2 anymore, due to the fact that I have completed the games I have and I don't find the others new and inspiring!
