All right, you all know I hate these posts but they seem popular so here goes.

Many months ago (well, 7 yesterday) I purchased a Sony PlayStation 2 from the Special Reserve Discount Network. After saving for many, many months and doing a whole host of odd jobs, my brand spanking new console arrived on my doorstep on Friday 24th November in all its vertical glory. With shaking hands I carefully opened the box and gingerly eased out the black beast. I plugged her into the mains, hooked up the SCART cable. I tuned on the power switch and pressed the brilliant blue button labelled “eject”. The CD tray slid out and stopped waiting to receive its first meal. I opened the SSX case for the first time and placed the cool blue disk into the beckoning tray. Just as smoothly as it had appeared, it retracted back into the box taking with it the greatest game on the PS2.

From the very moment that I pressed the “Reset” button for the first time until I write this now I have never, ever regretted the purchase of my console, even through concerns of DVD playback, mains supplies, future support and the announcement of the GameCube. Never once did I think “Maybe I should have waited” or “I wonder how much I’ll get for it”. Never once did I think “The graphics are fantastic but it’s not as good as the PSone”. Never once did think “I wish I’d got a GameCube instead”. Never once did my confidence fail in this little black box and I have enjoyed every single second of our relationship. The PS2 is here, it’s now and it’s great. I’m sure Khazar, sxxpro, Bonus and everyone else blessed by this stallion feels the same.

Now, as you all know, I have been pretty annoyed by people slagging off the PlayStation 2 and as I’m sure most of you will agree it’s pretty pointless. The main points for their arguments are “The PS2 has no good games” and “The GameCube’s graphics are better”. Well, all I can say is wrong on both accounts.

Let’s deal with the first falsity. Here is a list of great games on the PS2 OUT NOW!

Crazy Taxi
Escape from Monkey Island
Formula One 2001
Gran Turismo 3
Le Mans 24 Hours
MTV Music Generator 2
Onimusha: Warlords
Quake 3
Rumble Racing
Shadow of Memories
Sky Odyssey
SSX
Star Wars: Starfighter
Tekken Tag Tournament
TimeSplitters
Unreal Tournament
Zone of the Enders
Plus a wealth of great PSone titles

Here’s a list of great titles coming out imminently:

Age of Empires 2
Dark Cloud
Deus Ex
Extreme G-3
G-Surfers
Half-Life
Soul Reaver 2
Twisted Metal: Black
WipEout Fusion

And here’s a list of great titles in the pipeline:

Black and White
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2
Final Fantasy x
The Getaway
Grand Theft Auto 3
Herdy Gerdy
Ico
ISS Pro Evolution 2
Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2
Metal Gear Solid 2
Motor Mayhem
Shadow Man: 2econd Coming
Silent Hill 2
Star Wars Racer Revenge 2
Smuggler’s Run 2
Space Channel 5
Spyro the Dragon 4
Tomb Raider: Next Gen
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3

And the best thing is I’ll be playing all these and more before the GameCube has even hit the shelves. The fact is the PS2 has a wealth of fantastic games and although they may not suit the tastes of Nintendo gamers they definitely suit mine. Sony: I love ‘em. They challenged convention and brought gaming to whole new levels.

Now to address the issue that the GameCube allegedly has better graphics. Now, I’ll tell you this for nothing: It doesn’t, as any tech-head will agree. The average Joe has been fooled with unclear terminology and buzzwords such as “Gecko” and “copper wires”. The fact is that the PS2 and GameCube have virtually identical abilities. They both go about it in different ways but in the end they’re final destinations are metaphorically within walking distance of each other. Now, I could go into a lengthy explanation as to why this is but it would just bore you all to death and you wouldn’t understand. The fact is that behind all these “clock speeds” and “gigaflops” they both produce about the same amount.

So, PS2 or GameCube. How did I choose? Simple. I like PlayStation games best. In my opinion they are better games and more suited to my tastes. You disagree? Fine. We’re all entitled to an opinion. If not, why did we bother with World War 2?

Metroid isn't a release title. Besides, the game is going to be a first person shooter, therefore completely different to earlier versions of the game.

Luigi hasn't been the main player in a game before, so it's not really a sequel.

No Mario title has been announced.

Mind you, you could have said Wave Race or Super Smash Bros:Melee, they're sequels in the proper sense of the word.

Okay then, original GAMECUBE launch titles. Well I don't know exaclty what's scheduled for launch, so I'll go for games that I know about, that will be out around launch: Eternal Darkness, Pikmin, Super MonkeyBall.

Mind you, whether they're sequels or not, does it matter, as long as they're enjoyable games?

Turbonutter's original post was a very good one, and I'm pleased that he, and other PS2 owners are enjoying their consoles. I'm sure if i had a PS2 there would be some games that I would like to play. It just so happens that I have decided that I'd rather wait and get a GAMECUBE. I've played Nintendo games for years, and I want to see what Shigeru Miyamoto can do next with the Zelda series, as every game has a new innovation. I want to play on the next Mario game. I know that there will be games available that I will enjoy AND my family will enjoy. I really don't think that the PS2 is a suitable platform for youngsters.

Now onto the graphics debate.

I'm not a hardware man, i'll admit it. My knowledge lies mainly in the software arena, but here's what I know. Comparing specifics is ultimately pointless, as the PS2 and GAMECUBE operate in such different ways. What I know of the GAMECUBE is that the console, and development kits are created so that developers spend less time on the graphics, and more on the gameplay. It has been said that the Playstation 2 development kits aren't quite so user friendly, so it takes more time to get the best of it. Any decent developer will take this extra time, develop their own tools, and make best of the console but it could lead to delays. It did on the N64, and is quite apparent that it will on the PS2. Delays aren't wholly bad, as it means that the game will eventually be better, but it's still frustrating.

I'm glad that those of you that have a PS2 are happy with it. Honestly I am. I'm sure that the console will bring you years of enjoyment. I'm also positive that the GAMECUBE is the right console for me, and that I'll get enjoyment from it!

There are differences between the output capable by the PS2 and the Gamecube at the moment!! Currently the PS2 seems to be incapable of hitting a decently high resolution, but the Gamecube can, that is why the images you see are of a higher quality, but when they are put side by side on a TV screen, the difference will only be that apparent when you have a big expensive TV, and in my bedroom, I don't think so!! The Gamecube, in the beginning will also be able to handle better looking textures as only Sony seem to be able to ,anage to get anything decent going, as will Red Dog with Jak and Daxter, but then that's a long way away!!

What the Gamecube can;t do as well as the PS2 is draw distance and Polygon count, the PS2 is the most advanced number crunching console out of the big three!! Each car in GT3 will consist of 20,000 polygons, 6 cars on the screen at once and all the background and nice graphical effects to boot, then you will se what I am on about. Quiet basically, they both have good and bad point, but what really matters are the games, and I think they have been more than covered!!

That's because the GameCube has 2-year advanced technology but makes it really easy to code for so all the games out now are really close to the machine's capabilities. Sony took technology 2 years inferior to the GC and performed absolute bloody miricles with it. The end result is an all-powerful beast which no-one really know the capabilities of, not even Sony. Some of the games coming out, even now, are very close to GC standards and everyone predicts it will equal or surpass the GC.

I meant Sony in the first place, not the PS2.

Excuse me Gohan, but I KNOW that you haven't seen a lanky plumber wearing green dungerees exploring a huge haunted mansion with only a vacuum cleaner for self-defence in case of ghosts that try and take his health away! *HUUUUGE intake of air by Shocky*

Now. if that's not original and exciting, then I don't know what is!?!?
