Already this year we have seen Sony finally overcome their supply problems with the PS2 and manage at the same time to get a £30 price drop out of the weakening pound, about time too!! We have seen the mamoth console begin to take a tighter grip on the world's gaming community and finally the games are coming to back up the system!! The Gamecube has been officially announced for a release in America in November, a whole week before the might of Microsoft uses all of it's strength to push the literally mamoth Xbox out of it's doors and onto reinforced shop shelves acroos America. Again with this latest release of consoles, we, the poor Brits, get left up to six months behind the rest of the world, but then again, we don't make anything ourselves anymore so we can't really complain!!
Those old schooler may have thought they had died and gone to heaven within the last week as SR finally managed to give them the early Christmas present they had all been waiting for, the Gameboy Advance!! It is exactly what it claims to be, an Advanced version of the Gameboy. Boasting sweet SNES graphics in the palm of your hand, very cool, if you are into that sort of thing!!
Come and gone has the muscle of E3, where the Future Of Gaming is truely defined by the companies behind the games and systems we love so much. Not even a die hard Sony follower could claim anyone but Nintendo managed to steal the show, with their impressive Gamecube and an even more impressive release line-up, which is almost assured to be bolstered by a Zelda and Mario game come the time for a UK release. Sony were at the show too and startled their current and prospective PS2 owners alike with working demonstrations of their modem and Hard Disk due for a worldwide release before Christmas. And contrary to popular belief Microsoft were in fact at E3, but they are probably glad no one noticed as their "working" demonstration model Xbox failed to boot!!
Along with the successes each company has made with their respective consoles, there is a smudge of bad news which has plagued all three; they are struggling to give third party and independent developers enough support whilst they rush about making thier own games. Before the year is out, the PS2 will begin to set standards for the other companies to try to catch and maintain, with the lieks of Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Jak and Daxter and Herdy Gerdy just a few of the massive titles due to hit the PS2 before the sleigh bells are ringing in our ears again!!
The future is bright and yes, we do bicker about who is best, and then who is even better thn them, but today I matured, today I realised something which I hope I can share with you all. No one is any better or worse than the next man, all they can do is their best, and if you like their best, give them your hard-earned cash as a reward. If not, find another whom you prefer!!
All that I do know is that I am, at the moment, happy and content playing my PS2, and am looking forward to the future with baited breath. There will be highs and lows in the gaming industry, and at the moment we are in a low, there are more good movies based on games, coming out than good games themselves (taken with a pinch of salt and it goes down fine!!).
Before I go, I would like us all to take a minute's silence for the death of a sleeping giant, Sega. We all love that little blue hedgehog and his chums, and we loved Sega's consoles although they were always plagued by having something superior alongside them, setting the pace. The Saturn and the DC both failed to take on the might of the Playstation, although Sega did make a valliant effort.
Farewell Sega as we know you, and hello to a new era of Gaming!!
*Claps*
But as you were saying the Future of Gaming does looks bright. People say it's an over-run topic, but with games and consoles coming out all the time, not one single second is the same in 'our' industry.
The Future Of Gaming... I bet no-one knew it would lead to this... a Gameboy with the Power of a playstation... a Nintendo console that relies on the PC based Open GL. A Microsoft console, that now, thanks to support from quite a number of developers, is looking good. Make no mistake about it, the X-Box will be great... Maybe not able to offer the same 'fun' as the Gamecube, BUT, in it's own right the console could, and probably will do well!
Remember it's the games that count.. the X-Box has the specs... don't worry about those. Like I said... it's the games that count and with franchises like Unreal and Jet Set Radio on the way, Microsoft won't find it so hard to get a foot in the industry as they once thought.
I don't want to make any rash predictions but in my view, despite their new hardware prospects Sony will have the most trouble... Peter Main, CEoM - NOA,said that Gamecube games would be cheap and depite the rumoured prices of $50 / £45 a piece, they'll probably go down.
I think Sony MIGHT do a Sega and puch all their resources into the PS2 and it's On-line play network... but remember, like FM said, the fun is being taken out of on-line play and if Sony put all their eggs in one basket they'll be in for one hell of a shock if it breaks! Having said that, I wouldn't about Sony, they have a very good backing from... well, themselves, but money is money, and if they pull this on-line gaming hoo-hah off they'll be rolling in it and Nintendo and to a lesser extent Microsoft, will fade further into the back ground with the launch of the PS3.
