I was wondering if anyone has played both Red Faction and Perfect Dark ?

I have both the N64 and the PS2, and I have to say that I still have not come across a FPS on PS2 that surpasses Perfect Dark (or indeed, Goldeneye).
Just look at Red Faction, yes you can blow up walls but this really doesn't add a whole (not pun intended) lot to the experience.
The Red Faction enemy AI leavew a lot to be desired, (You can be spotted and shot from miles away, as in Timesplitters aswell).... whereas in Perfect Dark on N64 the AI was really impressive, with enemies only responsing to you when they should...

Then look at either Zelda game on N64, nothing comes close to those on PS2 yet... Dark Cloud, don't make me laugh.

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing the PS2, because I really like a lot of the games on it like SSX and DOA2, but I honestly feel that the N64 had superior games from a pure playability viewpoint. I'm dissapointed by the PS2 in general, and I'm hoping things will improve on it.

Can't wait to see how the Gamecube works out. But if the N64 is anything to go by then in my opinion it'll beat the PS2 on the playabiloity front with ease...

Come on PS2 developers, give us a game that is actually worthy of the platform.

And before anyone gives out... yes I have played the MGS2 demo... very very impressed with that, but how long is the overall game, and how much time (if any) do you spend off the boat ?

Red Faction just seems like too much running around, shooting, running etc. without a whole lot of thought behind it.

There is no denying that the graphics are better than the N64, but the death animations are not as good as PD or indeed Goldeneye. I dunno, maybe I've been a Nintendo fan for too long, and can't make the adjustment to PS2 ! That being said I love SSX...

I'd love to see what would be produced if Rare turned their hand to making PS2 games. For now I know they're producing the sequel to perfect dark on the Gamecube, and I could almost guarantee that it will be another award winner.

I agree Kevd PS1 had nothing compared to PD or Goldeneye. When I say nothing I only mean in the terms of a FPS.

I think that PS2 will do as FPS's can know look good and can be compared to PC graphics. Timesplitters is an excellent game but I havent played it nearly as much as I have played Goldeneye when that first came out. I dont hang out with all the same people I use too and not having any friends who would want to play on the PS2 all the time as they are PC lovers makes playing multi-player a bit thin on the ground. But when Goldeneye was released I was younger and didnt have too much important things to do so I could spend time playing.

I actually havent player Perfect Dark but I know that it is a good game. Red Faction is a great game, you have more than just a FPS here. You can control vehicles which are very fun, theres the gun turrets that you can take over. It has a pretty good multi-player. The Geo-mod is a great feature that means that you can blow up walls and make new pathways. Instead of killing the enemies why not blow the bridge up from under them making them fall to there deaths.

Iam not saying that RF or Timesplitters is better than PD or Goldeneye but they are very good games and are games that are esstential if you own a PS2.

I am not trying to knock the PS2, I wouldn't have bought one if I didn't think it was a good machine. I'm just concerned that it is not getting the games that it deserves just yet (and please no one start going on about MGS2 to me, I know that will be a good game).

And no, the playstation one never had a game to equal Perfect Dark. (If it had then why did it not receive a load of awards ?)

TimeSplitters: with no slow down

Sorry to say this but there is slow down. I experienced it on Thursday as my mate came over to play on the PS2. We set up all the bots on a 2-player game and had prox mines, rocket launcher and grenade launcher. It slowed down when there was tons of explosions happening at once. Its rare to have it slow down but it can happen if you try to have too much going on at once.

People say Red Faction AI is rubbish. What difficulty are you playing it on? Dont forget we have difficulty settings for a reason, if your new at the game and put it on easy you dont expect to have the first guy kill you just because he is so intellegent that you cant hit him.

Someone else said the AI was rubbish on F12001, as the other cars went slower than he could. Well if you have it on easy they will drive slow, because you put it on easy so that you can

a) Win easy if your good.
b) stand a chance of winning if you keep going off the track and smashing your nose in.

I put it on the hardest difficulty once and the cars were getting better times than I could get in qualfying.

In Red Faction the hardest difficulty will mean that the enemy will be smarter as if your playing on this difficulty you should be good at the game. Try it with the bots on multi-player and see well you do when you put the difficulty right up.

The n64 has it's strengths but just not the many of them. Goldeneye is good but it's dating now and we have agent under fire which will blow that completly away.

Perfect Dark well this is good but the 64 doesn't have many good games so this stands out more, If this was on Playstation it would have been a game that came and went if you know what i mean.

Zelda, man Ninty fans go on and on about sequel hell when they just have the "upgrade" of the nes or snes games, yeah it's not bad but there a bit hypacriticle.

Perfect Dark was certainly a fine first person shooter. It had a huge amount of options for the multiplayer and character building options, as well as a huge one player game. However, Red Faction has a one player game to match this in my opinion.

TimeSplitters is the king of multiplayer first person shooters, and now Red Faction takes the one player crown. Perfect Dark was good overall, but only because it scored fairly well in BOTH departments.

The PS2 needs a single FPS that has both the incredible fun found in the multiplayer and also a truly great single player experience. For now, it has two games that cover all the important characteristics.

Single Player gaming - Red Faction:

Perhaps the artificial intelligence in Perfect Dark was impressive, but not that much better than Red Faction. In fact this can`t be judged properly until a few of us have actually completed the game. It is entirely possible that the AI could be quite stunning in later sections of the game.

Already the AI of the large virtually indestructible robot that you meet when you are escorting a defector has a fair amount of potential. It follows you around, responding exactly as you`d expect in real life. It can not detect you when you are not in its sensor range.

Obviously the main feature of Red Faction is the Geo-Mod technology, which has certainly proved a whole lot of fun. I spent ages firing torpedoes in the submarines to see how far I could get. Then I started dismantling walls, and creating my own doors which I found very interesting.

The story line is obviously very important. This may seem strange, but I find the Red Faction story line much more believeable than that found in Perfect Dark/Goldeneye. A secret agency capable of funding huge covert operations all outside of public view. Its nice to watch Bond movies, but they aren`t very realistic. However, it is entirely possible that in the future, other planets may become our main source of raw materials, and corperations such as Oltor may easily become a reality.

Graphically the two can`t really be compared, as one is on the latest in console technology, where as the other is on a near dead console. As a result, Red Faction looks a whole lot nicer, giving it the edge in realism again.

A last little thing in Red Factions favour has to be the music in the intro. I turned it on for the first time, and let the music run for a while, and was quite stunned by the power and sense of emotion conjured up by the music. Even the voice in the intro sequence has that cinematic style to it, adding an "epic" feel to the game.

Multiplayer gaming - TimeSplitters:

Just a short point really, as this has been discussed before. Basically, would you prefer a high speed blast `em up for 1-4 players, with no slow down, and a superbly addictive style of play, or a slightly dated 1-4 player shooter with nice style but painful slowdown. TimeSplitters really is an awesome multiplayer experience.

Overall:

If you want both multiplayer and single player, Perfect Dark may just have the edge over Red Faction, but in the specialised arenas of Red Faction and TimeSplitters, they are the kings.

I would have to agree with Kid Rock - Red Faction is far better story line wise, graphics and gameplay!! The A I is questionable but I find it more playable than Perfect dark, which was my favourite FPS until R F came along!!
They are both fantastic games and it was close but R F just edges it for me!! What are the chances of a sequel appearing??
