Well, as we all know, graphics aren’t anything. Some of us will argue that graphics mean nothing, and these new super-fly consoles should concentrate more on AI than eye candy. This too was a view held by me until recently (it’s funny, most PSone owners think that!).

I was playing MS Flight Sim 98, supposedly the most realistic flight sim ever. But when I was playing it I thought, “Why haven’t I got the feeling of flying?”

I like flight sims because they simulate the feeling of flying thousands of feet above the earth, which to me is a great feeling. It allows you utter freedom, not just in two dimensions, but upwards as well. “But,” I thought, “In order for me to feel like I’m really flying, it’s got to look like I’m flying. That way it confuses my senses into thinking I’m flying.” And it’s true, I do feel like I’m flying when it looks like I’m flying.

One game I do get a feeling of flying from is Sky Odyssey. Even though it doesn’t have super-accurate physics, it looks the business and really gives me the feeling of weightlessness. The game really does look as if I’m doing 150 knots at 2 angels. Whereas I’m sure FS 98 really does have the aerodynamic structure of a Boeing 747 programmed into it, because the scenery is undetailed and flat, I just don’t get that elated feeling.

So, what’s the point that graphics have to be at be at before they can be forgotten and gameplay can be concentrated on? That, I can’t answer, but here’s by views:

Graphics are a sliding scale. What works for one game doesn’t work for another. Take The Bouncer. Imagine this with Vib Ribbon graphics. This doesn’t quite work does it? How about Vib Ribbon with The Bouncer graphics. Still doesn’t seem right does it. The fact is, some games require better graphics than others. Some are purely representational (Vib Ribbon, Pac Man), and some are for the purposes of immersion and realism (Sky Odyssey, GT3). Different games need different graphics.

So, if not all games need good graphics, why are companies striving to be above the rest? Well, gamers are shallow. I’m not talking about me and you, but average Joe gamers, (dare I say it?) PlayStation gamers. These people immediately look at the graphics and judge a game literally by its cover. These gamers need something to wow themselves and their mates. They are show-offs. They are boasters. They are pitiful. These people will never experience Vib Ribbon, Pokémon or Super Bomberman. Therefore they are to given sympathy. But, nevertheless, there are a great deal of these small-minded individuals and they make up a good proportion of the games market and are to be accounted for. Nowadays, it all falls down to the lowest common denominator. Just developing for the hard or softcore is no longer done. Something for everyone is the motto these days. Well, ultimately we are the ones who suffer, but it’s like an ulcer: You gotta live with it for now, but someday it will go.

All I say is roll on Super Bomberman PS2!

I can't exactly make out who your against (if anyone) but you are right though, Graphics are important but no where near as important as everyone says.

Graphics can really make a game special by bringing the gameplay to life but on the downside can really bring down a perfectly good game.

For an example tomb raider 1, I never got into this game when i owned it on my playstation, I thought the graphics were the worst! I mean looking for a key that was just squares in some more squares was like a looking for a needle in a haystack.
Thats where i draw the line on bad graphics but when i played this on a PS2 with texture mapping the graphics became like wiping condensation off a window it was great so I played this game all the way through and finally saw what was so popular with it and it is really fantastic.

I don't mind simple and basic graphics but bad graphics in general just puts me off.I think Graphics can also enhance what else the game has to offer like Tekken 3, this game looks good and plays brilliantly like the others but even though it's exactly the same gameplay, Tekken Tag tournament is just a huge step up in graphics and makes the gameplay so much better.

When 3D gaming started like virtua fighter on the saturn the graphics are awful you can see the polygons all over the people's faces but we are way past that now and the graphics of games, the polygons really are small enough so you can't see them and I really don't think we need to worry about this problem anymore. Although i still think N64 owners were more conserned about the graphics,This guy at school brought in Doom 64 for £50 and the game was appauling but he kept going on about wow how cool are the graphics man playstation's rubbish and all this, We have doom and doom 2 on the same disc for a 5th of the price and it may not look the same but I think everyone now knows that it's a hundred times better.

As long as the graphics are decent enough to not spoil the game thats fine with me but looking at the stunning devil may cry demo and every format's new games really we've got some pretty nice graphics heading our way, I just hope the games play as good as the graphics.

we can only hope.
