Ah! I got it! Sega are busy, therefore no more games for Dreamcast. Brilliant! Great excuse.

Anyway, forget that - me, myself and Game n Grix were trying to purchase that Sonic 2 bundle from Sega Europe because the first 200 orders each got a special edition limited, highly sought after, rare and bound to be expensive Sonic 10th Birthday thing pack. None of us could, they actually got into the shop whereas I was staring at HTTP errors for an hour and a half.

Anyhoo,

I emailed and asked why I couldn't get in, and here's "Nikki's" response:

"Dear Daniel,
Thank you very much for your e-mail.
We are sorry to hear of the problems you experienced while trying to order
Sonic Adventure 2 + the Limited Edition Sonic Birthday pack from our site.
Due to the limited nature of this item, demand was so overwhelming that our
servers were saturated with users trying to order and the order process was
slowed down considerably, and at times the site itself was difficult to
access.
However we did receive a steady stream of orders throughout the night and
the 200 copies will be allocated to those customers who managed to place
their order first.
We do appreciate your disappointment if you were unable to place your order
and hope that this does not mar your experience of using our online shop.
Best Regards
Nikki McGarrity"

So I replied again. Naturally displeased:

My entire view of Sega has been "marred", but I shall continue to purchase from the online store just as often as I would otherwise have done (i.e. not at all). This is not because of the incredible slowness, no thanks to my happy but tired 56k modem, but because of the attitude Sega has towards Europe.

With titles being canned left right and centre the promise that Sega would not let their "unique offering" as one staff member so eloquently put, has been more than tarnished. It's been broken into a thousand pieces. Over the past year I have been reviewing Dreamcast games, peripherals and magazines and I have been very pleased with the titles released on such a great console.

I appreciate that you will have very little sway over the big cats at your company, and it's all about getting paid, job security and profits now, but the only way the crying voices of the gaming community can be heard is through people like yourself.

Half Life being canned was not a good idea, and Sega will regret it deeply.

Dan

Well, as not everyone, but some, know Sega is just a collective name for all of the inhouse studios. You got you're AM2, Hitmaker and Sonic Team and more - with daft names, but it seems Sonic Team - easily the most creative, original team, led by the genius that is Yuji Naka, like Nintendo's hardware more than the others.

Hitmaker looks like it'll be afixing itself to the financial security of the Xbox and Yu Suzuki - Shenmue and F355 creator, will do what he wants.

Anyway.

Blah Blah Blah.

Have they? I thought they were developing equally for all consoles.

Hopefully the DC gameplay and 'pizazz' will be carried on through to the Gamecube! I'd love to play Sonic on the Gamecube... but there's something about Sega...

They're so cool.... I'm glad they've chosen Nintendo as their main company thingy.

Dear Daniel,

It must be pointed put that Sega was not involved in publishing Half Life
for Dreamcast. Valve software stated that they had cancelled this game due
to 'changing market conditions'. To you and me that means that they didn't
think they were going to sell enough copied to justify marketing the game.
Obviously, this is very disappointing but does the absence of a rather long
in the tooth PC conversion really make all that much difference to the
quality of the Dreamcast games library ?

In any case, Sega has publicly stated it's support and commitment to the
Dreamcast for the time being and no matter what other publishers do, we will
continue making great games for Dreamcast. If FPS is your thing, then look
out for Out Trigger, possibly one of the most frenzied games of the genre
and many other delights by the end of the year.

Best Regards,

Frank Cameron"

Hmmm. He knows a lot.

Just for his information, Half Life was one of the highest pre-ordered games. It would have sold bby the millions.

Shame.
