In one of my previous topics that I created a while back, I talked about how hypes can effect the games. This time, I am going to talk about how hype effects new consoles.

Everybody is probably thinking," it's just the same as how hype effects games", but it isn't really is it. There is a lot more hype based around new consoles than there are of new games. Most of the points that were brought up in my previous topic could also be brought up here as well, but hype can have an even bigger effect on consoles.

As I have already said, there is a lot more hype based around new consoles than there are on new games.
Let's go back to the hype of the Dreamcast. There was tonnes of hype surrounding Sega's newest console. Sega's console before this, the Saturn, didn't do that well now did it. This could be seen as a cause for the hype. I mean, Sega having another crack at console supremacy after the Saturn essentially flopped, generated a lot of talk. "Could their new console be another flop, or could it really turn out to be really successful, like the Megadrive did". More and more hype began to generate, as more information arose and games were shown. The games showed a lot of promise, so the hype began to revolve around this. Due to the hype, a lot of people went out and bought one, and ended up disappointed. Some people compalained of lack of games at launch, some people even said that the games were pants. I remember standing in my local part exchange gameshop, and someone brough in a Dreamcast almost two weeks after it had been released, saying that it was crap and that they preffered the Playstation and the N64. All of that hype caused people to run out and grab one as soon as possible, parting with over £200, and then feeling that they had wasted. Just goes to show what hype can do?

There was a similar effect with the Playstation 2? The hype around this console was much bigger than that of the Dreamcast, simply because it was Sony, who had had immense success with the Playstation.Again, people rushed to pre-order the PS2, with the PS2 being sold old before it is even released. All of those gamers who had been eagerly awaiting the PS2, finally got their hands on the PS2, only to find it fulls of annoying flaws. "The DVD doesn't work, the games won't load", and there were several more complaints, and all of this was due to the pressure on Sony to get out as many PS2's as possible for launch. They had all read about the super powerful console, and all of it's magnificent capabilities, only to find that these capabilities didn't work. I'd be annoyed if it had happened to me. Then there was the complaint, that still gets made to this day, of lack of must-have games. Essentially, this was true, with only one or two games really standing out of the crowd at launch. Of course, now there are more must-have games out, but then, gamers were promised brilliant games due to the hype, and pre-order their console before even waiting for any kind of review. They then get disappointed when there were really, only two must have games; SSX and Timesplitters. Again, this is an example of how hype can have an effect on a console.

What about the latest hype over the next two 128-bit consoles, the Gamecube and the Xbox? I fear that a similar thing could happen to them. There is absolutely tonnes of hype, and they are still not due for release over here until next year. Hopefully, there will not be any flaws in either console as they should have all the time they need to get the consoles ready for launch. But, still, the games could (and I mean 'could') fail to impress, leading to a lot of disappointed gamers.
But, hopefully, this shouldn't happen.

Of course, the main culprits are magazines, internet, and Television, but I won't go into that as it has already been covered mostly in my previous topic.

God, just imagine what could happen if the Gamecube doesn't do to well. Judging by how a lot of people feel about the GC, then the reactions could be quite bad to say the least.

Hype could have ruined the console, but luckily it had a big fan base.

At least now, those must-have games are starting to appear.

The PS2 suffered most from this so called hype. It was a great shame because there was just far too many people who were expecting for too much from the PS2. It was, is and is never going to perform miracles.

I think people are starting to understand the PS2 and like it for what it is. Hype was very clsoe to ruining the console!

Any company is going to hype their products, it's what gets buyers.

Anyway, Nintendo have some launch games on show which is what hyping people up.

Sony hyped people up using the "Emotion Engine" and "PSOne was great so PS2 is better".
The games on the hype list were the likes of Metal Gear Solid 2 which wasn't going to be released until long after the launch.

The Dreamcasts hype wasn't based on it's launch games either.
