You might think I'm a bit mad, but it seems that whenever a good game comes along, nobody dares try to imitate it. There are loads of games that imitate Quake, but very few that make any impression onto Half-Life.

Undoubtably, no developer will dare try and clone something like Black and White, because they know that their clone will be far inferior.

Take the Final Fantasy series. Some of the most successful games of all time. Yet there are only a handful of games, all of them on consoles that make imitations. Despite this, there are hundreds of platformers, FPS games, and RTS's around, all of them the same, as well as bog-standard PC style RPG's.

Why is it that, as well as blatently making games that have been seen countless times before, so many developers insist on making them the same as other games that were pretty bad to begin with?

The answer, most probably, is that they know they can compete with the bad games. Trying to make a FF or B&W clone will almost certainly mean that the game is inferior, so why bother?

I wouldn't mind playing cloned games if they were actually decent, but it seems that nobody is able to make a good game these days. When one does come along, it is a profound and new event. Which I think is a real shame.

Er.....you're wrong here actually. No game has imitated C&C. They have all imitated Dune. Both these games are made by Westwood so you could say that there are too many clones of Westwood games. Dune was out first though. Just setting you straight.

A real game which keeps cropping up is the C&C (command and conquer) series. Loads of games imitate it, too many, infact.
