It almost became a craze like pokemon but it has been less drastic in its growth.Pokemon grew in weeks to a massive audience of young kids. But Sony sold loads over the years and dominated the market after two years in the industry. No matter who you side with, whether its Sega,Nintendo or Microsoft, the biggest player in the gaming industry is SONY.
This is deserved by all means. It produce some truly magnificant games, some declaring themselves as the best ever.Such as Metal Gear Solid which sold millions world wide. The racing genre was given a simulation game unlike the Outruns of this world,it was called Gran Turismo and revolusionised the word "Realistic".Fight fans around the world rejoiced when they could get their hands on the Tekken Triology, which offered fighting thrills with some increadible graphics. And in between these titles we had the lovely Ms Croft who was drooled on by thousands teenagers as they watched her bottom wiggle after gunning down a bad girl.Jaws hit the floor. Now look how successful she is,a film out in a matter of weeks. And never has a sport fan thought he was on a football field till Sony steeped up and produced games like FIFA and ISS,which gave soccer fanatics that chance to play as their favourite teams. And now we wonder why SONY has sold the PSX's around the globe. The games were great.
After a good 4 years in the game SONY knew they had the market, thanks to a mass advertising scheme which showed people what they were missing.Soon every 1 house out of 2 had a little grey console sitting next the T.V,causing a gaming revolution.Everyone was dedicated to SONY.Buying these cheap titles for a tenner making kids spend there pocket money on games.Comic book heroes no longer exsist in the eyes of many, they now have Solid Snake and Lara, who needs Wolverine and Superman. The public was won over and the name SONY represented the best gaming experience anyone could have.
And to this day we still see the playstation selling by the millions and if you take a gander at the charts you will see they are mainly dominated by SONY.After 6 years,Sony wanted a change and decided to take the gaming public to another level in gaming quality. They introduced the Playstaion 2 which represented next generation gaming in front of your T.V,and by heck it worked, they advertised so much, they drilled the thought into the publics head that SONY were again making the best in electronic entertainment. But was this the case or were they slighty taking advantage of their name...SONY.I believe they were. The games line up was unoriginal and quite boring, the same old names were churned out and the public imediately swarmed to the shops in the millions to be the envy of the neighbourhood.TUT TUT,many regretted it because they associated SONY with the best. But after a dismal launch SONY started to buck up there Ideas and created some truly great games and to this day they are still doing so,and guess what, the public are still buying them.
Games such as Unreal Tournament and Zone of the Enders showed the public that there was games that would not only revolutionise there gaming expereince but change peoples views on gaming. They took sports to another level creating realistic football sims not to mention the excellent Tiger Woods Golf which I love. The future is bright as well, with the release of the Bouncer and Red Faction this week (22/06) will certainly help the image of the PS2.And to mention what is possible the best game ever,Metal Gear Solid 2 making an appearence in the distant future. The old classics come back such as Gran Turismo 3 and Final Fantasy 10/11.So even though the presence of Both Microsoft and Nintendo's consoles,we will see the PS2 to continue to shine thanks to name.........SONY.
People who were there with SONY from day one will never go to Microsoft or Nintendo because they know SONY will never go the way of SEGA,They have money and they are reliable,Not to mention a gaming community that believes there is only one console out there at the momment.SONY=TRUST,and safety.

YOU TELL EM BIGGLES!
Well, Sony had to COMPETE with the well known names of Sega and Ninty. After all, no developer in their right minds would make games for an unknown manufacturer.
So, Sony made to console VERY easy to program for. The gave developers great software to make games, and even helped smaller developers financially. But MORE IMPORTANTLY, developers didn't have anyone else to make games for! Nintendo publically announced that ONLY they would be allowed to make games for the N64 at first, and THEN they would let 3rd parties follow. This was further agitated when Ninty announced that they would use the cart format, and that only they could print games!
So this left Sony and Sega to battle it out. But.. Sega had one HUGE problem. Their console was severly underpowered compared to the PSX. So, they decided to add another processor to it... that's right, just shove a processor in. Furthermore, they rushed the western launch of the console. They brought it forwards 4 months... leaving them with an impossibly hard-to-program-for console that had no great killer games.
So that's why Sony succeeded the first time around...
BUT NOW... Sony have produced a rushed console that is very hard to program for... gtg... continued
Sonic
Sony have had some great games published for their system and were lucky to get most of the good developers signed up to their label at the start. Yes, there have been some fantastic games for the system, but no more so than other consoles. The reason that the Playstation was so successful was simply down to marketing and strategy.
Sony are a big company, already experienced at selling retail electrical goods around the world, this meant that their market was always going to be the mass-consumer market and they knew exactly what to do to get their sales.
The difficult programming of the Saturn led to Sega seeing a lot of developers leave them for Sony, just unlucky, and Sega thought they could sell their machine on the strength of their name and the Megadrive's success. This was not to be and Sega's lack of advertising had cost them dearly, a mistake which they seemed to have repeated again with the Dreamcast. Still, Sega are back to where their strengths lay, in creating great games, and Sony have now said they are going to be responsible for marketing all of Segas PS2 games, so Sega are really in a lot stronger position than they ever were when selling consoles. This benefits everyone.
Sony got the market right, they knew their stuff when it came to selling the goods and getting all the right people on their side. Obviously, they have fallen a little way short of expectations so far with the PS2, resting on their aurals, perhaps? I feel that it will take a while longer, but excellent PS2 games are starting to hit the shelves now and it's slowly picking up.
Don't rule out Nintendo too soon, though. They seem to have the market just right for the Gamecube and the buzz around the market suggests that a lot of developers are interested in the machine. Games make a console, remember, and there seems to be plenty of them lining up before the European launch. Nintendo realise that there's more to life than Mario too, so expect a wide range of games.
So, yes, Sony were there at the right time and put a lot of effort into their PSX, all of which paid off, but they can't rest easy with that otherwise they WILL go the way of Sega, and with so many other interests, it would be easy for them to drop their games division completely if it all went pear shaped.

I want Sony out of the games market
How do you know that Sony will not be the biggest player in gaming? If can predict accurately in to the future with a success rate of near 100% than take up gambling. Also, just because you dislike Sony you surely can't actually want them out of the market? This would be terrible for everyone involved as Sony have arguably brought gaming to a massive mainstream audience so if Sony go, so do sales of games and consoles in general.
Oh and Wilmaaa, that was an excellent post. :-)
