Remember how a few years back, Jon Romero left his fellow quake programmers in order to start a new company called Ion Storm?

And they were allegedly working on a ground breaking title called "Diakatana". The hype for this game was huge. It was going to be the greatest thing ever...

A few years later it was released and turned out to be no good after all. So why is it the work of a genius?

Well half way through the project, Romero must have realised that it could live up to the hype and got sick of it. He left it and concentrated on a title a bit more secretly. So while Diakatana turned out to be rank, this other title came out and hit everyone by storm.

Deus Ex it was called.

Do you see how he managed to help make his game make a large impact by giving it no hype or expectations?

Genius, pure Genius!

(Now some one's going to tear this topic to pieces by pointing out that either PC magazines were hyping up Deus Ex for ages but I never heard about it or that Jon Romero was nothing to do with the game. Here's hoping no one will!! :-D)

Yeah... Like I say... Its not supposed to be 'Thief 3' ... In the interview, I think, they asked Spectre why they hadnt made a Thief (stealing) type game set in the modern world... And Spectre said that it was an idea that lent itself to the genre... and that it was the natural progression for that type of game... and that Looking Glass always tried to progress one step ahead... so...

Last i heard Theif 3 was going to still be medieval style, but a lot more fre form, like there was a city and you could do what you want.

Less linear than the others, kind of like a Shenmue, but with stealing.

Dunno man... I just remeber the info from an article I was reading about Deus Ex before its release last year...

I know they shifted over since Eidos managed Looking Glass... and after all the mags and quite a few PC gamers commented on their lamentations over the loss of Looking Glass Eidos recruited a lot of the peeps to work at ION...

Although Whether Specter had already left Looking Glass before it went under... I dont know

Still,
> good news about a Thief 3 anyway.

Aye... Although I understand they wanted to do a much more 'modern' Thief title (not for Thief 3, but as a seperate title) ... Although with pretty much the same setup as Thief... but set in 2000/2001 within citys such as New York/London/etc...

(Although I kinda suspect that was more of a pipe dream for Specter???)

I knew Looking Glass had gone bankrupt, but i thought that Deus Ex was nearly finished by the time they joined Ion Storm.

Still, good news about a Thief 3 anyway.

Looking Glass went Bankrupt... and most of the chaps went to ION and worked on Deus Ex...

Which is one of the reasons it plays so similarly to System Shock 2...

And is also the reason why they are currently making Theif 3

Deus-Ex was ok.

Thief was bloody awful.
Slow, cumbersome, awful to play and who could ever win a sword fight against anything more than a barrel of monkeys?

Shanks, Looking Glass worked on the Thief games, they had nothing to do with Deus Ex.

Well... they didnt ever hyp it up... although, there was always the odd feature about this other FPS being developed by the old looking glass folks which was looking pretty amazing...

(gotta remeber that Looming Glass had a strong (if abet too small) following...

Well... he was nothing to do with Deus Ex... :)

However... given ION Storms (Romero) offices were closed down a few weeks back...

And given how his name is currently mud...

I'd say it was a very interesting marketing move :)

I think Jon Romero had nothing to do with Deus Ex, Warren Spector was the man behind the game.

It has also been alleged that while Romero worked for iD, he didn't actually do much, except for play deathmatch. That is a rumour i heard though.

I suppose Ion Storms marketing tactics will just have to die with this topic...
