But do we really care? Birdo is not important. She, he, or it (whatever you want to refer to Birdo as) is a minor charcter that appears in Mario's games and no more.

So assuming his manual quotes are accurate, the original Birdo was.. confused. Then they changed it to make him/her a girl, probably because it was shaky ground they didn't need to get into.
