Looking to upgrade my graphics card. Currently have Geforce 2 MX400 64Mb but looking for something to comfortably run Doom 3. Don't want to spend a fortune, a ton maximum, any advice or recommendations appreciated.

I can't really afford to spend much on a graphics card to be honest - and my specs probably wont be able to cope with the 9800 pro anyway.
(2.0 ghz , 512 ram , 250 watt PSU)

So I was hoping I could get a way with the cheapest possible card - then it wont pain me to throw it away next year when I build a super computer. I don't want a card that will last me years - just a few months will do me. And I certainly aren't bothered about shadows. ;)

I have being using a 64mb MX 440 now for a good 2 year - and it still runs things quite nicely - it runs Halo a treat; granted, its not on high specs - but the warthogs seem smooth enough to me. Its crossed my mind to get another MX - maybe the 4000 128mb - cheap as chips, and if its anything like the card I have now, well, then it wont be so bad. Or even the Ti 4600 - i've heard that its value for money. So a cheap card that i can throw away in 6 months and will run the odd game like The Sims 2, Roller Coaster 3, and Everquest 2.

I hate numbers.

SEs are cut down versions of the normal card, ie slower. It worth spending more on a graphics card as the £49.99 9600 SE you linked to earlier will have to be replaced very quickly as Doom 3 and Halflife 2 etc will not run too well on this card.

A 9800 Pro is around £120, bit more expensive. But if you CPU and RAM is decent then Doom 3 and Halflife 2 will run pretty well and you will have a pretty decent gaming machine.

Just. I wouldn't recommend the SE edition though.

I'm currently running Doom 3 on an FX 5200. (I have a 1.4GHz P4, 630MB RAM). Now this is technically under the min specs. However on low setting the game runs ok, though with some very nasty slow down in more graphically complex area. I Think with Doom 3 your main concern is your graphics card, thats why I'm gonna upgrade also.

Yeah ditch the graphics card. 9800 Pro would be a decent card to get if you only looking to spend £120 or so. A X800 or 6800 would be excellent, but at £300+ there not cheap, especially as the top models are reaching closer to £400.

Indeed, trying to run doom 3 on that card is like trying to run a marathon when you have no legs.

WoW!! That Graphics card is holding back what would be an awesome machine - I strongly suggest "Hammer to FX5200 card" action...
