Looking to upgrade my graphics card. Currently have Geforce 2 MX400 64Mb but looking for something to comfortably run Doom 3. Don't want to spend a fortune, a ton maximum, any advice or recommendations appreciated.

A high end Radeon 9600 or a low end Radeon 9800, for around £120 - £150.

How easy would it be to overclock a 9800 pro to XT speeds?

And will this card play Doom 3/HL2 etc. at a decent quality?

Should do if you dont turn on AA, and use performance AF

My system is a XP2800, 9800 Pro 128mb and 1Gb RAM, friend has the same and he also runs the game fine, with a bit lower res. I run 1280x1024 and he does 1024x768, I have a 19" monitor and he has a 17", so I need the better resolution. Also use that res as I dont have to resize my monitor as thats annoying when playing a game at a different res to your desktop setting.

AF in Doom 3 is easy to do rather than performance AF. Requires modding the config file manually.

I have Doom 3 running well at 1280x1024 on medium with 16 AF(set in the config) on a 9800 Pro. Also changed some config settings to increase the picture sharpness, look for lodbias and change that from -2 to 2, default is 0. 2 is very bad, while -2 is the best. If you look in the distance it increases the detail on distance objects.

Thing with Doom 3 is to run the quality set at the start up. Medium is for 128mb cards, running high can have serious pauses during stages of the game such as doors opening. Now people have changed the cache settings in the config file and seem to get smoother game play but I havent managed it.

Ultra is for 512mb cards so even with the new 256mb cards you might struggle with this setting, considering the amount of uncompressed textures that are being moved about.

The thing is to experiment, as people with systems that arent top spec are running Ultra quality well, yet others struggle.

Look into tweaking Doom 3 as you will find that there are settings which may increase the performance, while the graphics arent changed.
