All I can say is thank god for cartoons like POKEMON and The simpsons which continue to use True Animation!

That's all Pokemon is about, anyway.

Ok on first apperaance catching Pokemon or in the real world animals is not right, obviously. However even the youngest of children no it is wrong to catc animals and that the way that we aquire animals is by a Pet Shop, or a freinds animal etc. In Pokemons defense it does teach children how to look after and care for their animals and also shows the concequnces of this (if you watch more than one episode).
I do not Know the episode that you are refering to but Ash (the main Charactor) has looked after his Charizard through alls its various stages of development. For a Pokemon to develop it must be not only cared for but Trained. When Charizard went through it's final stage of development it gained an attitude problem (like human teenagers!) and this is why Ash would have been retraing Charizard. In a future episode Ash continualy cares for Charzard after it is injoured in battle. With Ash's determination not only did Charizard recover but it finaly fully respected Ash for making it well.
My final Point on Pokemon is that NO Pokemon EVER Die unlike other childrens TV progarams.

In Pokemon there are exelent story lines not to mention underlieing morals.
