So what do you say? Do you say it’s because of the graphics, or is it the game play, or maybe you like the visuals! Well do you ever take in the fact the two littlest things, the two most important facts that every gamer should consider. You may laugh, but the characters and storyline are one of the most important things that make a game good.
For example. The game Shenmue. All the games tell you about the main character Ryo is that his Dad died and he wants to find his murderer. You have to find out what this player is like, and what his personality is like. The same is with the less important characters, you have to decide for yourself if you can trust these people, or if they’re bad to the bone!
Also, with the game Soul Calibur, it wouldn’t have so much depth without the story. Many beat’em ups don’t bother with stories, but SC does. It makes you come back for more saying “Why does the next character want this massive sword???” You feel like you know the game and the characters better when there’s a story to it. And with Street Fighter, it wouldn’t be the same without knowing that the characters have come from the 4 corners of the world to be the ultimate martial arts fighter.
The stories haven’t been the best with the gaming world. But they are getting better with the likes of Shenmue and the Final Fantasy series. In fact with the Final Fantasy series one of the games apparently made people cry with one of the main characters dying, yes, I know. It sounds sad, but it’s true.
One of the things that annoy me with bad story lines are clichés, like when the bad guy is always the good guy’s Dad. Or when the son or daughter always gets kidnapped, or the worst one, has to be… Aliens trying to take over the planet. I mean it’s so original. There’s Half Life, Perfect Dark, Armorines all with this story… The list goes on and on and on and on and on (well so do I, so that’s why I’m getting to the end)!
The reason that I’ve wrote this topic is I want the people of FOG to answers to these questions, What do you think of the quality of Stories in gaming to day? What are some of the biggest clichés? What game has impressed you with stories and characters and have you ever cared for any characters???
