Another reason we were knocked out was due to Gary Linekers failure to put his head in amongst flying boots. I seem to remember John Barnes putting in a perfect cross in the last few minutes and Lineker had the chance to score with a header from no more than two yards out. The ball was low, meaning he had to stoop amongst flying boots, he seemed to hesitate and the ball just flashed across the penalty area.
i remember hearing somthin about maradona playing in a friendy match for dundee with Caniggia, did it ever happen?
Maradona:1986.
(Not in any swayed by the fact he scored THAT goal against England, or that his best mate Claudio Caniggia was a Dundee player for one season!!)
(losing only to the 'hand of god' goal from Maradona).
losing only to the hand of god? i seem to remember maradona taking on ( what it seemed like) every single outfield player. I think maradona deserved the "hand of God" goal just based on what he did for the other goal. if there was a system where you got points judging on the effort and skill in one goal, that goal would have top marks.

Do deflection count for this rule? ie they dont

Nope, it must be the person playing the ball.
> so much stood on just one kick. Bergkamp v schmeichel. If bergy had put the ball in the back of the net i reckon arsenal would have done the double that year. The confidence of the Man utd players would have been shattered by a knockout from arsenal. They probably wouldnt have even won the euro cup. The united players had the belief in them that anything was possible after the arsenal game. Its just sad to see that it seems they have lost it now.
I could not agree more. United had so much good fortune that season. You need a huge amount of luck to win three trophies in one season. Look how much Liverpool rode their luck in the FA Cup final against Arsenal (and the Worthington Cup against Birmingham), then won the UEFA cup on the golden goal rule.
Careers of players and managers and the fortunes of clubs can take a major turn with just one kick of the ball. I remember a Mark Robins goal for Man Utd during a cup tie in the late 80's that saved Ferguson from the sack !!. John Barnes won about 80 England caps on the back of one great goal against Brazil in 1984 (ish). Gary Lineker was looking a very ordinary striker for England during the '86 World Cup when Bobby Robson teamed Lineker up with Peter Beardsley for a must win group game (against Paraguay I think). Lineker scored a hatrick in that match and England got to the quarter final (losing only to the 'hand of god' goal from Maradona). Lineker was on the brink of being discarded by England before that match but went on the win the World Cup golden boot with SIX goals. He finished his international career as joint all time leading goalscorer for England.

1) If a player plays the ball away from the goal to his own player when the recieving player would normally be classed as offside, it will not be called as offside and play will continue!!
2) If the last player to touch the ball was an opposing player (i.e. a passback) then a player cannot be called offside!!
What I remember most about that night was the immense hostility from the Man Utd supporters. I was an Arsenal fan sat in the Man Utd section and had Bergkamp scored THAT penalty and Arsenal went won I would have been very lucky to have got out of there with all my limbs intact.
