As we all know, most ignorant gamers think of Nintendo as a 'kiddies' company who make games only for very young children. There have been adverts for Pokémon featuring 8/9 year olds and their huge range of 'cute' games and characters doesn't help.

the more intelligent gamer will realise that Nintendo make games for all ages. They may look cute and cartoony, however they are challenging and may be quite hard for young children to play.

So are Nintendo trying to change this image?

I think they are!

GameCube games like Super Smash Bros Melée and Zelda have a more adult look to them. Although Super Smash Bros Melée is still brightly coloured and has all the mario gang in it, the fighting is more intense and probably more competetive. The battle between Gannon and Link shown at E3 and Spaceworld is certainly more 'grown up' than the previous games. Both characters look more realistic and less cute, and the background is so detailed that it really brings you closer into their battle.

The Game Boy Advance is also changing Nintendo's image. So far not a single Pokémon game has been created for the Game Boy Advance. This is a good thing because, although 'Pokémon World' has been announced, gamers aren't going to be put off so easily from buying their Game Boy Advances. Games like Castlevania and Sonic are coming to the Game Boy Advance, as are F-Zero and Tony Hawkes Pro Skater 2. These games are moreso for the older generation of gamers. The advertisements by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance are different to their previous adverts too! One is based in a shooting range, and somehow they used that to advertise Super Mario Advance!
The two Game Boy Advance console adverts have main characters who are all older teens/young adults. One of them shows a young man playing F-Zero Maximum Velocity whilst holding up a queue at an Airport. And the other shows a young man relieving himself in public toilets whilst playing Super Mario Advance and not taking his hands off the console.

This is certainly different to Nintendo's younger image and I hope Nintendo keep on trying to change their image!

If Nintendo are trying to destroy their child style of games, I really can not blame them for doing so as I think this is the only draw back the company has on them. I have nothing against the games, which are seen as “kiddies” games because I enjoy them so much. I don’t care what people think, as long as I am enjoying the game that is all what counts for me really. I remember when I bought a Pokemon game from shop one time and the person who worked there gave me a weird look as if to say “aren’t you a bit old to be playing games like this” either he was thinking that or “that boy looks like a monkey”. Anyway, I didn’t care too much, as I knew that it was to have fun with the game that really mattered and that is what I done.

I do not really care if Nintendo plan to change their image with the Gamecube, but I would care if they stopped making the games that are looked at as “kiddies” games because I know that I would miss them all terribly. I know this will not happen because we have already been told that we will get to play a Mario game at launch, as well as a game that stars Luigi as the main character. I think that what so many people like about these so-called kiddie games is that the gameplay is just so good. Also, the story lines are very well thought out and leaves you feeling very addicted towards the game.

So, I don’t think it is so much of a case of loosing their kiddie image but more as gaining an adult image at the same time. I know this may sound confusing but if it actually works then Nintendo will be dancing merrily around a coconut tree in bright coloured clothes and throwing their arms in the air with delight. Games like Perfect Dark are to me, perfect for a child and an adult. They feature humour and it is a game where you can muck around with your mates or book a date with it on Saturday night to try and beat the last boss you have been stuck on for the last few months.

So, with the Gamecube having more adult games out for it, as well as the classics I can’t see Nintendo going wrong, and I think they will do very well with the Gamecube. I really admire them for the games that they make. I really do feel very privileged to be playing games like Mario. I think that it has become a tradition for Nintendo to make games that are cuddly but as the same time very challenging to the gamer.

I think that with the N64 Nintendo were thinking to themselves “who cares if we are producing kiddie games” because afterall, they were selling well. However, with the Gamecube I think that they are thinking “we best release a few more adult games to get the adult gamer involved with the console”.

I think that, deep down, Nintendo know that they can’t just stop making games that feature cute characters because that is what they are really good at. Take Mario, Pokemon, DK, and all the other games that have cute and cuddly graphics the N64 would have never been as successful as they are today.

At the end of the rainbow I am a kid because I am only 14, so I am expected to play games that full my mind with wonderful thoughts and generally making me feel good in side. I think my mum would much prefer me to be playing Mario where you get to save people rather than Grand Theft Auto where you get rewarded by killing people and running them over with cars etc.

I think Nintendo are trying to get a balance in the children and adults section, they know that to succeed with the GameCube they have to make sure their games both appeal to adults as well as the younger generation of children.

I have grown up with Nintendo as my games company, just like many millions of other gamers, with this in mind I know that any game from Nintendo that may seem a bit childish is infact still going to be an amazing game... I used to be a kid playing Nintendo games and I am now sixteen playing Nintendo games? I don't find a difference in the enjoyment of any of the games from the past of current age.

I suppose that Nintendo can easily be mistaken for a childish company with the likes of Pokemon and Diddy Kong squirting around the place, but then again these people wouldn't really know what they are talking about. Sure Mario Kart and Pokemon may look like very childish but they are probably two of the best games of all time, and appearence isn't everything.

The GameCube is hopefully going to give the gamers the right balance between childish and adult games, we will have games like After Dark being released at the same time of games like Donkey Kong Racing.

Nobody can blame Nintendo for them currently showing an appearance of a childlike gaming company, because it has recently lead them to great success, I don't think any company would be complaining if there profits had risen 72%.

I don't feel Nintendo will try to change their image, because they won't have to try, the games will be the face of the new Nintendo. I personally don't care what Nintendo game I choose at launch of the GameCube, because just as all other Nintendo games, you will be guarenteed a great game and superb gaming experience.

Thanks

Nintendo are bringing us back the DK and Mario we used to know from the Snes.

Still cartoony, fun but the dim witted/casual gamer is now less likely to mistake it for a little kids game.

That way we're happy because we get the great games still and Nintendo are happy because EVERYONE buys their machine :-)

I saw some more shots of Sonic Advance in a GameBoyAdvance magazine (Yes they now exsist) in WHSmiths yesterday, and I have to say Im very impressed by what Ive seen. The game will apparently have a 4 player linkup (racing I hope :-) ), and should be released in time for Christmas.

As for no Pokemon games available yet for the Advance, surely thats bad news as theyre great games. However I'm sure a Pokemon game will appear sooner rather than later :-)
