Right, I ended up buying an ASUS K8VSE motherboard and an AMD Athlon 64 3200 cpu.

Installed everything perfectly to the book and turned on the power.

Over the speakers came the sound "System Failed CPU test"

The monitor didn't even come out of standby mode.

Any ideas on what to do?

Cheers.

Got it working now :D

Turned out it was a crap power supply in my computer. I've now doubled that with a new power system and its working great.

Just got to overclock my 3D card a little to try to improve the framerate in Doom 3 (I'm not bothered about low res play at the moment, just want a decent framerate until I can afford a better graphics card)

Have you made sure the CPU is seated correctly and put in the correct way (might sound stupid but it happens), there should be an arrow pointing to one corner of the socket which the arrow on the CPU faces. Have you tried clearing the CMOS? (will tell you how to do this in manual), make sure the fan is plugged, check for any bent or snapped pins on the CPU. Also make sure *both* of the power cables are plugged into the motherboard, there should be a 4 pin power connector and an 8 pin one (it's the biggest one) on my A64 board you have to have them both plugged in because the CPU uses more power than say an Athlon XP, Hope this helps mate! If not it sounds like a dud CPU!

Return the processor for a new one.

I just don't think you have a chance of it actually being OK.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
