Just see if it's got a free trail. You play it free for a month, if you don't like it at the end or don't think it's worth shelling out a monthly subscrition for, then there's obligation for you to continue.

It'll have a fixed monthly cost, and (though I'm not entirely sure as far as FF11 goes) should also come with one month free trial. Find the official website, it'll tell you the payment details, sometimes developers even have different paying options such as paying for 3 months, or 12.

You only have to pay for MMORPG's (massively multiplayer online role playing game’s) that require a cost to keep the expensive servers running 24 hours a day, as well as paying for constant updates and new content.
Dedicated servers are very expensive.
