I'll put this as simply as possible.
If you're a fan of Multiplayer then N64 wins hands down.
If you prefer Single player then PS has a slight edge.
Let me explain.
N64 doesn't take time to load, has the best mulitplayer games around, easily allows four players without a multitap and the PS1 doesn't have any 4 player games nearly as fun.
I know that the N64 has hundreds of first class single player games but the Playstation has even more.
Because CD's are bigger than carts, the PS has the bigger adventure games. Final Fantasy and MGS are exclusive to the Playstation for instance. The laoding times aren't such a pain while on a single player advaenture either.
Despite N64's Zelda games and a few others being untouchable in single player, the PS has a wider range in that area.
BUT, with there only being a small difference between them single player wise and the N64 being miles ahead in the multiplayer arena, I'd say that the N64 is the best alrounder. You might think differently but:
They are both great in their own little ways!

look man, You seem to have some very serious issues writing all the wineing posts trying to annoy SR for not winning, Don't think I'm trying to annoy you but writing lines like the one above just shows what kind of a sad individual you really are. (You haven't even done that right)
I'm not going to argue with you but your obivously don't know much about gaming beyond the console you own and after some strong warnings i wouldn't have another tantrum and it's still a flipping miracle that you aren't banned.

If you are a big games fan then the N64 is definitely the one to have. If you are a casual gamer you know plays occasionally then the PS wins but not because it is the best because it is not. But it was a fairly accurate summary.

a lot of magazines started comparing to goldeneye a full year before it even came out. They called it the sequel to goldeneye and in a sense it was. But that game was way overhyped. Magazines shouldnt do that sort of stuff, it really spoils it for everyone. But i suppose they gotta shift as many copies as possible.

anyone seen that turok triple pack SR are doing? its pritty good value. £30 for turok2,turok3 and rage wars. none of them are top class games but they are better than average. I might think about gettin it. The blood gore and weapons in them games are pritty cool.

Yeah, and hopfully Perfect dark 2 will have a wicked multiplayer. Although Perfect dark on the 64 had loads of weapons and options for multiplayer, i think it just lacked that somthin specail to make it a goldeneye beater.
Look at the topics in this forum. Trust me, it is still continuing.
Anyway, I expect that with the PS2 limited to just controllers at a time (unless you pay and extra £30 for a multitap) and the Xbox having a lack of Japanese devellopers will mean that the Gamecube will keep it's lead as the best mulitplayer system around
(especially with the likes of Smash brothers Melee, DK Racing and Mario Kart on the way)
And with the Disks holding much much more then the old cartriges, then it will be just as good as it's competitors in the single player arena too.
That's why I think that the Gamecube will be the best machine to own over the next couple of years.

Ps1 is 7 years old and all the games can be loaded 12 times faster and beautifully enhanced to sharpen the "Squares" on a PS2 and besides all the PSone new releases are kiddie games now, so sorry to dissapoint you but the "Which is better debate" has been over for quite some time.
