Before anyone says anything, this is not a console war topic, more of an in depth look at todays consoles, and next years consoles (Gamecube and Xbox). I have seen a lot of topics and the consoles in a whole, and by themselves, and I never really gave my proper view of the consoles. Well, that's all about to change.
In the last 10-15 years, console technology has certainly advanced dramatically. Games becoming more realistic, graphics getting closer to looking like real life, or photo realistic, should I say. At the moment, the console war has relly heated up, with three massive companies going at it to be crowned king of the console market.
First of all, I will take a look at the current consoles (excluding PS2, I'll talk about that later).
It seems that things aren't looking so hot for the old consoles, namely PSOne and N64. At the moment, it is looking worse for the N64, with Nintendo concentrating on the Gamecube. In the way of games, there aren't that many more heading it's way. N64 fans still have Tony Hawks 2 and Pokemon Stadium 2, as well as Mario Party 3, Paper Mario and the brilliant Exitebike 64. It seems the Gamecube has sentenced the N64 to death.
It doesn't look so bad for the PSOne with 65 new PSOne games on the way, including Final Fantasy Chronicles and Syphon Filter 3 among them. But, still, developers are now concentrating more on the PS2, so that 65 will soon be over and done with, and very soon, new games for PSOne will stop. I suppose it is to be expected. With developers and publishers now concentrating on the three new 128-bit consoles, there doesn't seem to be anymore room for the PSOne and N64 anymore. Of course there is the Gameboy, the most successful console ever, but even that will suffer the same fate, what with the Gameboy Advance coming out in one week.
Now then, the current consoles. Well, there has been loads of topics on which one is best, and which one will win the console war. But none of that here, all I will do will take a look at each one and give my view of them.
First of all, the PS2, the most powerful console available at the moment. It had a bumpy start, with only a few outstanding launch games. But, things are looking up for the PS2, with some superb games heading it's way, with GT3 and MGS2 just to name but 2. There is also the promise of the internet, with a special network adaptor box becoming available that will allow you to connect to both broadband and phonelines. And there will also be a desktop LCD screen, keyboard and mouse released for that full on internet experience. There is also the harddrive, a headset that will allow you to talk to the other players during online play and there are also well over 100 new games heading the PS2's way. Sony are certainly not giving up, showing determination and innovation that will make sure the Xbox and the Gamecube get the fight of their life.
Then there is the Gamecube. Only recently being properly unveiled at E3. It is going to cost about 200$ in the States which almost certainly means a £200 price tag over here. The release dtae was also confirmed in the states which was November 5th, three days before that of the Xbox. There is certainly going to be one hell of a launch scrap. But what does the GC have to offer. Well loads really. Several games were confirmed, with some of the games playable at the E3. The GBA can also be used in conjunction with the GC acting as a controller. Brilliant! Everyone certainly seems to be wetting themselve over the Gamecube, and to be honest it is looking really good. But as good as it is, it will have a lot to contend with when it is released, what with Sony showing massive determination to make the PS2 stand out, and the Xbox will just be around the corner.
Last, but certainly not least, is the Xbox, the console that everybody loves to hate. The Xbox didn't exactly have a great E3 now did it, but that aside, some of the games look amazing, with Dead or Alive 3 being the game that I am most looking forward to. The news that it will arrive three days later than Gamecube in the States and will also cost 100$ more, certainly caused some raised eyebrows. Microsoft are promising 600,000 Xbox's on the shelves at launch and expect to sell 1 million consoles in America by the end of the year. That is certainly a bold claim, what with the Xbox going directly head-to-head with the Gamecube, and the PS2 will also most likely be dropped. Will people pay more for the Xbox, or settle for the cheaper Gamecube and PS2, which both have shown, can certainly deliver some quality games. Only time will tell.
Oh! What about the Gameboy Advance? Well, there is no direct competition, some quality games, and is at a wallet friendly price. And, is back compatible. So, is already has hundreds of games available and it isn't eben out yet! Bound to be a success.
So, there it is. My view of the consoles. Each one of the latest consoles certainly has a lot to offer, and I am certainly impressed by all of them. They all look good, and have some quality games coming out for them. To be honest, I hope they are all successful, because it is us gamers that benifit for it. Long live the consoles!!!!!
