I don't know if this is a definate "yes", but it seems pretty certain by the looks of things.

Discuss.

Backwards compatibility sucks.

You don't want to sell the first consoles games to fund the next one.

BOO!

Who actually cares about backward compatibility though? Seriously, how many people played PS games on the PS2?

The other big issue with backward compatibility on the Xbox is that all my game saves, and vast amounts of them, are on the Xbox hard drive. So I'd have to have some way of transferring them for me to give up my Xbox itself.

In saying that, I never doubted we would see backward compatibility on the Xbox 2. Whilst a totally difference architecture, it is SO much more powerful, somewhere in the region of 15, that it really wouldn't be too difficult to write an Xbox emulator.

But would you still be able to play Xbox 1 Live titles online though?

I heard you'll need a new Xbox 2 Live account/subscription.

Never read into it much though - too busy reaping the greatness of the current system.

I care. I never sell my games and if consoles weren't backward compatible, my room would be filled up with more consoles then it is already...

Who, me? Yep, I've got the set (PS2, GC and X-Box). I also had a PS1 but I gave it to my sister.

Me. Quite a lot too, seeing as I never owned a PS.

Oh, that's the easy part. There are a few different ways to go about it.

Backwards compatibility isn't for people who own the Xbox or PSone, its for all the people who never owned those consoles. It's just a way for Microsoft to make money off of their old games with a new console.

What's interesting is the QuickTransit technology itself; it'd be so much easier for programmers to just make one version of a program, without the need to recompile or change any code, and still have a truly worldwide base - basically anyone owning a computer with sufficient power will be able to run it.
