...that yet again, rip-off Britain is in full-effect.

After reading a news article that we, the British Video-Gaming public are about to pay over the odds for Nintendo's GameBoy Advance.

According to this article, Nintendo didn't actually set a fixed RRP for the hand-held, they apparently let the retailers do that. However, Nintendo usually give the retailers a ball-park figure and I believe it was in the region of £75-£79 for the hand-held. But, according to this report the price for the hand-held will start at an unreasonable £90 with NO games bundled.

Speaking of games, they're going to be priced between £29 and £35, which in all honesty is taking the mick. Yeah, they may be good games, but let's face it, we're paying £30 for a retro title, with a bit of a face-lift.

I'm not belittling the GameBoy Advance, far from it in fact, as I fully intend to purchase one. However, it won't be bought from this country. Again, I'm resorting to the importation of the hand-held as I'm guarenteed to get it a darn sight cheaper than I would here.

Why do we put up with it?

Yep.

The States have taxes per state, as opposed to a main country-wide.

Hence you can cross over the state line and buy things much cheaper.

I have found video-games to be pretty standard priced though.

New PC games in the U$A were $50 - $60, which is only barely cheaper than here.

Cds however...$18 for new release.
24 multi-pack of Pep*i cola $2.99

We in the uk get our pants yanked down daily over pricing.

I can't give actual numbers, but Nintendo set a trade price for the GBA, not a retail price.

The trade price is such that a £79.99 inc VAT selling price is unrealistic. i.e. there is insufficient margin.

Once again it is primarily VAT which causes the differential between UK and USA, and this is the true rip-off.

We have to put up with it because the companies think we will put up with it. The problem is, we WILL pay £30 for a game. If we boycotted buying games the WILL put the prices down, but who's going to that, ey?

That's cool an' all buddy! But, my point is that most of the British gaming-public aren't connected to the Internet like we are, so they're completely oblivious to this
situation for the time-being. Online shopping isn't a viable solution to them like it is to us.

Going back to *that* report, it also went onto say a retailer is already taking pre-orders for the
Nintendo GameCube, which according to this retailer, will be £150. Yeah, right! I'll believe it when I
see it.

This is true, I bought a brand new Gameboy Colour for £36 last year in Tenerife, when they were still £79.99 over here. I haggled with the guy and got pokemon blue (in spanish) and a power adaptor free with it. We really do get the wool pulled over our eyes about here, but if what you say about the GBA is true, SR might be able to put on a decent deal, no??
