'Wastes Battery' I hear you say,
'Makes the machine too bulky' I hear you say,
'Costs More' I hear you say,
Well we all know that, but what about those LEDs...you know the ones in mobile phones, I know for a fact that you can get white LEDs for around a tenner to fit on your mobile phone, and the colour mobiles in Japan use them, so why not the GBA?
The Nokia 7110 can go for 230 hours on a single recharge, so what about the GBA, all we expect is around 10-15 hours, even 5 hours would be good, just as long as we get the screen backlit.
LEDs are the easiest and most efficient way of getting a backlit screen, and, from my Gameboy Colour experience, I don't like those magnifier lights either.
What do you think?
Would you pay a few quid extra for a backlit screen?

Cost is one of them. To buy all the extra lights would cost quite a bit, especially when the GBA sold over 500,000 GBA's in the first 4 days of release in Japan!
Batteries. It will need to take up more batteries to power a backlight. For LED's (Those who don't know they are Light Emitting Diodes: Small lightbulbs usually red) it would be battery consuming and probably be tinted a funny colour. Lights on watches and Mobile phones tend to be a blue or green colour.
Size. The GBA is ment to be as small as possible so you can fit it into your pocket. It is very small and extra circuits would mean an increase of size.
Light Boy. These were released years ago and had a backlight. They didn;t sell too well, the batteries did run out quick, and when the lights broke cos they were dropped or because they burnt out, there was no way of replacing them!
If Nintendo thought it necessary they would've included one!
