Well...why doesn't it???

'Wastes Battery' I hear you say,
'Makes the machine too bulky' I hear you say,
'Costs More' I hear you say,

Well we all know that, but what about those LEDs...you know the ones in mobile phones, I know for a fact that you can get white LEDs for around a tenner to fit on your mobile phone, and the colour mobiles in Japan use them, so why not the GBA?
The Nokia 7110 can go for 230 hours on a single recharge, so what about the GBA, all we expect is around 10-15 hours, even 5 hours would be good, just as long as we get the screen backlit.
LEDs are the easiest and most efficient way of getting a backlit screen, and, from my Gameboy Colour experience, I don't like those magnifier lights either.
What do you think?

Would you pay a few quid extra for a backlit screen?

Not everyone plays at night anyway, and if they do there is a light source. A backlight screen would be for the kids who are put to bed at 9 and want to play pokemon while they're mum and dad are downstairs. It would be a minority that wanted a backlight screen. Just like digital cameras the backlight screen would drain the hell out of batteries. My digital camera lasts 10 minutes maximum with the screen constantly on. Those who say that the screen wouldn't use much power are wrong, it would. The only reason mobiles dont run out is because its a useless backlight screen, just a few leds lighting up the sides of the screen leaving the middle a kind of blackish green colour. A proper backlight screen would use too much power and a mobile one would look awful, so there is no point in implementing somthing that a minority want and also that somthing already caters for: the worm light.

If you get an adaptor then it doesn't run out!

It doesn't make too much difference with duracells or Panasonic batteries, however with the cheaper ones they can drain a bit quicker.

The worm light really is good for lighting up Game Boy Color's! I use mine at night every night whilst playing on my Game Boy. It saves me getting out of bed in the middle of the night to turn it off...

It dosen't have a backlight 'coz six AA batteries would only last about two to three hours, so think about how many times you have to go and get batteries, imean after a few weeks you probley could buy another gameboy advance.

Oh and about the Nokia, does that play games what look as good as the gameboy advances constanly eh?!

I think the main factors in Nintendo's choice not to incorporate a backlit screen are:

a) Cost. Nintendo has already stated in its GC manifesto that it wishes to make the hardware available to the masses, by giving it a mass-market price tag. This probably goes for GBA too.

b) Time and Other Consoles. Ninetendo needs consumer loyalty. In the US, GC and Microsoft's X-Box are released within days of one another, with the Gamecube being $100 cheaper. If you already own a GBA by then, with the promise of interactivity between the two, and the price difference between the GC and X-Box, you would be much more likely to pick up a cube than a box that week. The GBA is like a secret promise you will also by a Cube, so it needs to be released as early as possible.

c)The backlight would add much more to the cost, for only a small percentage of users to reap the benefits. Also, Nintendo loves Peripherals, and an attachable light would be ideal for an extension stregy, especially in Japan, since they tend to enjoy using 'gadgets' like this more. Its part of the Hi-Tech thing.

The minute i told my dad about the GBA he asked about the backlit screen and and i said there wasn't one ! He was gobsmacked , because when we went to Gran Canaria i picked up a Gameboy Light (gameboy pocket with blueish greenish backlit screen !) it lasts for ages on 2 aa batteries and the picture looks even better with the lights on. So i think it should have the lights , also it is only just slightly bigger than the Gameboy Pocket , but is smaller than the GBC so what is the problem.
Any of you that are on EBay may have seen then mobile leds on there and they come in a HUGE range of colours , i am gonna buy some of these led's , get an old gameboy and experiment at putting them in ! i'll tell you what happens in a few weeks , fingers crossed.
you never know Nintendo may decide to bring out a new GBA with backlit screen !

The back lights on mobiles are horrible, the buttons look okay but the screen looks a horrible tacky green colour. I think we should all stick to light magnifiers or wormlights. Although I'm not sure how they will make a light magnifier to fit the body of the game boy advance. Have you seen the cartridges? They're tiny! Less than half the size of normal colour and mono game boy carts!

Still i would have liked a backlight on the GBA. I like playing at night before i go to sleep. And if it had a backlight i wouldnt have to use the room light. i say this becasue with the backlight i would need my bedroom light on, so i wouldnt need to get out of bed to turn it off when i had finished playing on my GBA if it had a backlight!

how much battery power does a worm light use?
