THey're both laptops, and both cost £1100.

The first one is a Compaq 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4
800 Mhz FSB
512 Kb Cache
512Mb RAM
60Gb Hard Drive
DVD Rewriter & CD Writer
15" XGA TFT Display
128Mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP (is this graphics card any good?)

The Second is a Sony 2.8Ghz, 40Gb HD, 512 Ram, similar 128Mb Graphics card, but it has a better widescreen monitor (I think it's an x-black one, but not sure), and importantly to me, it has a dual-layer dvd rewriter. So I think that means each DVD can hold about 9Gb of data, right?

Which should I get? Also, will it play new games well enough?

Look at Evesham Technology for laptops. £1250 gets you a AMD 64 3000+, 60GB HDD, 512MB RAM, 128MB ATI 9700, DVD Writer and a nice 17" Widescreen

I doubt that laptop would keep you going for too long game-wise. I'd suggest getting a PC with a TFT instead. It'd be expandable and you're paying through the nose for portability when you buy a laptop.

I dont like the look of either of them to be honest, the battery life will probably be pretty poor, especially on the first one and im pretty sure the only mobile card that will run the latest games with pretty settings is the ATI mobility 9700, or the nvidia alternative.

Have you considered the centrino line of notebooks? Especially the ones with Dothan processors?
