I need to use an acoustic guitar in an upcoming gig so need one that can be plugged into an amp. I can possibly borrow one of someone, but I'd quite like to use my own. Is it possible to fit a mic or acoustic pickup inside a normal, non-electric acoustic guitar to convert it into an electro acoustic?

NB: Before anyone suggests that I can just use a mic and a boom stand, I do realise this, I'm just exploring options.

A tenner? I was expecting you to say fifty quid or something. I'll definitely get one then.

Depends on your price range but usually the different between an acoustic and an identical electro-acoustic is about £70-80 whilst a piezo can be bought for a tenner. Thats judging from my local music shops anyway. And since they apparently dont require drilling anymore (if you say so, i havent bought one in years!!) then any monkey would be able to fit one. However, if you screw anything up then you're on your own. if you take it to a music shop and they mess anything up they have to replace your guitar :D something as simple as a pickup though should be no trouble.

Hey Metalhead, when you say its cheaper, what sort of price are you talking? And is it the sort of job I could do myself or would my local music shop be able to do it for me?

metalhead - just to bring you up to date dude, most acoustic add-on pickups have NOT required drilling for about 8 years now ;)

If you want to fit a pickup what youre looking for is Peizo. Its what electro-acoustics use, and some very posh electrics have them in the saddles of the bridge. Infact some very expensive Ibanez's have piezo's under each of the floyd rose's bridge saddles together with separate 2-band EQ. The slash signature guitar also has something similar (fishman bridge).

As far as converting acoustics goes, do what I did for best results. Instal the peizo under the existing bridge (may need to file it down a tad, depends on what sort of action you play with), and to save drilling holes in random places on the body, use the output jack to replace the tail-end strap pin. Most piezo's now come with jacks that you can attatch a guitar strap too just like any other strap pin. It means you dont get the EQ as you would on an electro-acoustic, but its a hell of a lot cheaper.

Do you ever re-read anything you write? Very little of that actually made sense.

God your just cretacism, cretacism now. No he does not play Blink 182, he actually does things like disco's with the guitarist of my band. With all music and the speakers and all the switches so he does know a lot. But he couldn't be bothered to say much.

I think it's worth bearing in mind that Crossbob's friend is probably a 12 year old who plays Blink 182, badly. I'd ignore any advice Crossbob tries to give on anything, ever.
