could anybody help me , hoe the hell do you unlock crash modes ?

Yah. I don't play normal crash mode.
Yes, right before you start the junction.
The DJ starts whining on about the level, then you get a quick preview of the junction, then, it'll come up on the screen:
'Gold - $xxxxx
Silver - $xxxxx
Bronze - $xxxxx'
Or something like that. It comes up every time because you need to press the button to skip past it.

just out of interest is there a way of seeing how much money you need to get in order to get a gold medal . .. ?

For Crash mode, you just need to earn medals to unlock more events. Accumulation of Crash $ is also important as later levels won't be unlocked until you have earned enough money. You'll also need to earn gold in every Crash level if you want to complete Crash Mode.
