Take away the football and he's just another low-life wife-beating drunkard. Plus, of course, he's ruined a second perfectly good liver which someone far more deserving could have had the benefit of.
In my opinion, that far outweighs any respect gained for what he did on a football pitch.

He was a great footballer.
He earned enough money to do whatever he wanted to after he quit.
He chose drink. I have no problem with this.
He ruined his liver. Not good.
He didn't deserve preferential treatment for a new one.

I did feel sorry for Dennis Law after he went to see him this afternoon and then burst out crying when the media asked him how Best was.
At least someone still cares for him.
