Ok gonna be building a new computer around December time, just tryin to spec it out, gonna be my first build from scratch pc so if something looks like it's not going to work please let me know, well here's what i've come up with:

AMD 64 4000+ San Diego - £293
ATI Radeon X1800XL - £305
2GB Ram - either Geil or Crucial DDR PC3200 CAS3 2x1GB - £164
Hard Drive: Samsung 160GB Spinpoint Sata II - £59 OR
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 160GB SATA NCQ - £63
Tagan TG480-U01 480W ATX 2.0 - £58
Antek SLK3000B Midi Tower Case - £34
LG GSA-4167 DVD+-RW Dual Layer - £31

I'm kind of stumped on the MObo though, dont relly know what i need, looking at Asus or a DFI Lan Party around £120ish if possible.

Any views or issues with these parts? Cheers Guys

Don't go to an Radeon x1800 XL, it costs more than the Nvidia 7800GT, but performs the same or worse than it overall.

I'd still get a GTX because itll allow games to be released to run at your resolution as well. It's only £50 though. Just sell something worth £50. Or dig around your house for change. Maybe.

nothing dude, when you get to this stage, £50 is nothing, just sell some games or something?

I'd change the RAM to:

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS) @ £211.44

Which I'm currently using.

downgrading graphics card will have a much bigger performance hit than going to CAS2 RAM.

OK After a bit of tweaking i've come up with this system:

AMD 64 4000+ San Diego - £230
XFX Geforce 7800 GTX 256MB - £352
ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe - £112
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3500LL Pro TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 - £234
Samsung 160GB Spinpoint Sata II - £59
Tagan TG480-U01 480W ATX 2.0 - £58
Antek SLK3000B Midi Tower Case - £34
LG GSA-4167 DVD+-RW Dual Layer - £31

However this is over budget by around £50, what do you think i should downgrade, i thought either the RAM to CAS3 timing, or the graphics card. One other point i have a tft so max res will be 1280 x 1024, is it still worth having such a good card or should i drop down to a ATI Radeon X1800 XL 256MB? Thanks again

Corsair 1GB DDR Value Select PC3200 CAS2.5 Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT400) (MY-041-CS)

£80 on OC's.

Or Corsair 1GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x512MB) CAS2 (MY-030-CS) if you're willing to pay a bit more.

£94 on OC's

Thanks for that Damarus, looking through it i understood most of it so i looked for some 2.5 memory (2 is out of my price range!) and i found this:

Crucial 1GB DDR PC2700 CAS 2.5 - £88 so is that better than the first one?
(1GB DDR3200 CAS 3 - £82). Just confused by the 2700 and the 3200, tried looking on google but i cant find a site that compares them using both the CAS and the Speed of them combined.

I've decided (I think!) on my mobo and GPU:

XFX Geforce 7800 GTX 256MB - £352
ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe - £112

Thanks for all your help people

That article says it's not worth it.

'You're much better off spending that money on a slightly better video card or buying a good sound card instead of relying on integrated audio. Heck, even a really good mouse would probably be a better investment toward making your computing time more enjoyable.'

interesting article though.

Not sure what they did their system to get such crap FPS on painkiller as i've found it's one of those games that runs smoothly at a good FPS even on naff computers.

can you post the name of that other site for the 4000+ please.
