Will he go or will he stay ?
> A lot of this uncertainty must be blamed on Wenger himself whose continuing hesitation and failure to actually commit to an extension to his contract (despite repeatdly assuring fans it would be resolved quickly) leave everything up in the air.
I agree. Wenger should have signed a contract long before now and his dithering has made several players question their future at the club.
As for Vieira I don't think you can blame him for considering a move. He could walk into any team he likes. A player of his ability should be winning major trophies every season. A players career is short and if he feels he is at a club which will not challenge for the champions league then you can not blame him for wanting out. Arsenal had a great chance of winning last season and perhaps Vieira is right when he says we might have pulled it off if we still had Overmars and Petit in the squad.
If Arsenal were serious about competing with the big boys then they should waste no time in splashing out £60m on three or four major signings. That would signal our intent and Vieira would either have to sign a new contract or make some other excuse for leaving.
He's told us not to release great players so we won't. Let him rot on the reserves bench for all I care. Arsenal fans have tirelessly cheered his name and is a firm favourite we hoped would take over the capataincy post-Adams. He very recently said how happy he was at Arsenal after firmly putting to rest rumours of a move following the two red cards easly in the season. If he has turned so quickly it smacks of opportunism and shows no respect to loyal Arsenal fans.
What would be more galling is if he ending up precipitating a move for Pires who I believe is our best player (after Viera, obviously) and a strong prospect for next season.
I hope it is all just media rubbish and that Viera will stay at Highbury for years to come but, if if the stories are true, I see no reason to bow to his demands.
Of course, this is just one symptom of an increasing sense of unease and hesitation at Arsenal with a number of matters unresolved (today's papers are even hinting at serious opposition to the new ground at Ashburton Grove!). A lot of this uncertainty must be blamed on Wenger himself whose continuing hesitation and failure to actually commit to an extension to his contract (despite repeatdly assuring fans it would be resolved quickly) leave everything up in the air.
Wenger needs to get his cheque book out quickly and convince Vieira that he can acheive his goals at Highbury. I doubt Vieira will receive the same adulation at any other club, and he has been promised the Arsenal captaincy when Adams calls it a day. I reckon he will stay - but I am not convinced. These French players seem to change their mind every other day.
Vieira will be a tough person to replace if he were to leave and considering that Arsenal needs to buy a lot of players to cover what is an aging team is just going to be a headache for Wenger.
