...the end of the Dreamcast is near, and with Black & White leaving the format the expiry date of the Dreamcast is coming up at a fast pace.
So then, what about the future? What's going to happen, well if you are ready for this bold prediction then read on...
Microsoft are going to fail. With the price and competition of the PS2 and Gamecube the XBox doesn't really stand a chance, the console is ugly and in some peoples eyes looks do matter, the platform is losing and will lose many games which were once called exclusive to it, the control is a beast, the truth is the third party controllers are going to be better than the official ones, and with the ever increasing headache of all of this Microsoft are losing the battle in grabbing potential buyers and support in Japan, which really is the centre of gaming, whatever happens in Japan is a tell-tale of what happens in Europe and sometimes America. The Xbox was and has been a failure from the very second Bill Gates (yes he did) thought of the name.
Sony. Well what about Sony, The company many of us Nintendo fans love to hate, well I have to say that I have been very impressed with Sony in the last few months, they held themselves up well at E3, the have kept a lot of people in a kind of strangle hold and won't let them let go of the Playstation, but my personal opinion is that the Playstation 2 has been warped by the success of the Playstation, nothing could really ever match that for originality of ideas and the profit/sales it made. Although I admit that I have been impressed with Sony so far I see a crack in the black structure of the Playstation 2, the crack is telling me that although the system has had very good games, great to play, superb to complete et al. The system hasn't yet had a killer, which could guarentee success for the system, a killer game is one I consider to be something special that brings something to the world of gaming that has never been brought before, the game that makes people buy the console because of that game, yes you have the anticipation of Metal Gear Solid 2, but this game is going to be released in parts of the world after the Gamecube and Xbox, that I feel is Sony's big mistake, people in Japan and America will choose Mario and Starfox over MGS2, also worrying that although Sony had a rosy E3 this year the main showcase was on MGS2, which was what the main showcase was on last year, don't get me wrong Sony are doing well for themselves, but they need to understand that they have an excellent console, but they don't have the excellent differencial winning games. For Sony will continue to do well, but for how long remains to be a mystery?
Nintendo, ahhh yes the company my gaming world has evolved so beautifully around, what are they going to do this time? Last time they made the one big mistake of choosing the cartridge over the disc media, this lost developers and caused only a few to side with the N64, but that was then, and this is a prediction topic, so when Nintendo finally release the GameCube it will probably have a few problems with the press and rival machines, I don't think a Mario launch game is planned, however Nintendo may be strategically planning a Mario game launch alongside MGS2 to dent its competitions sales. The GameCube has been received very well by the general public, the games are just sounding stunning (didn't say looking because looks don't make a game). The new ideas like Starfox of combining elements of Adventure, Flying and RPG is making my mouth salivate. The Gamecube is probably the console with the most support, the GameCube has a company that has learnt from a few large mistakes, and with the promise of more adult games I don't see there being much in the way of stopping the potential of the GameCube.
