I heard chav for the first time a couple of years ago. Oh and I have a few lame chav jokes as well:

What do You call a chav in a box?
Innit

What do you call a thirty year old Chavette?
A Granny

It's derived from the phrase "Chatham native".

I've often heard it comes from the fact Chavs first emerged in Chatham, and couldn't pronounce the name properly... then again, someone speaking with a fake London accent to sound "Hard" has trouble pronouncing most words.

I doubteth this muchly, as they seem to populate Essex as heavily as northern Kent. Why I typeth as if I speaketh a retarded versione olde English, I am not know'd of.

It's just southern people's inability to pronounce charver properly.

I still think it's just a stolen and mutated version of "charver", a northern word for, well, charves/charvers/radgies.

Back when we were 12, people were "proper radgie charvers"

Ah, those were the days...

We used to use it as one of the words to describe stealing, but it didn't refer to 'Chav's', we also called them 'Townies'.

It developed into an acronym later?

Damn.

That makes it a gay word.

Ned is still better.

Oh, and "Council Housed And Violent" is what I heard too.
