Just caught the end of some history programme that said the Saxons were invaders of Britain.

Obviously my rough knowledge of history only goes back so far as I hadn't given it much thought and assumed the Saxons had always been there (whenever you hear about them it's something to do with them being on British soil - so it never occured to me they might've come from elsewhere and not been part of the general population).

So anyway, my question is:

Where did the Saxons come from if they're not originally from Britain?

I could google it, but I thought this would be more interesting. :)

There were a few, Visigoths and Vandals included. Rome was sacked by the Visigoths around 410AD.

From Germany?

I thought that was the Goths? :S

Oh hang on the Goths came from further north and swept through Germany I think... So which race was the main one to finish off the Romans then?

The Saxons came from North Germany. They first time they tried to invade Britain, the Romans stopped them but after the Romans left they tried again and succeeded, pushing the Brits into Wales and West Cornwall. They were rulers of Britain until 1066 when the Battle of Hastings happened, after which the Saxons all became peasants.

Or so says my Horrible Histories book.

As far as I know it was Germania wasn't it? The borderlands around the Roman Empire I had thought.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
