They're actually the remains of a bail used in a match between England and Australia in 1882. Austrlalia won the match and a journalist wrote a joke obituary to mourn the 'death' of English cricket:
"In affectionate remembrance of English cricket which died at The Oval, 29th August, 1882. Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances, RIP. NB The body will be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia."

I am no cricket fan but I must say that we all enjoyed it at this house, well done lads on getting the ashes. Does anybody know what the ashes really are, I did not know what they were until the lads won them back and my husband knew and he was born in an other country, so wondered how many people know the answer to this question.
