By the time you've got any usable sheets, you're halfway through the roll as it is!

I tried the slow approach, but it seem to be stuck so the sheets several layers lower.

You just need a little patience and gently prise the first sheet away. With the amount of time that guys spend in the loo you should have plenty of time to do this successfully.
