Qualifying: Alonso in the best place for late Championship charge
Race: Is the Championship in the bag?

Fernando Alonso took pole position in wet conditions, his 6th career pole position and the 3rd time this season, all in the last 5 races. Alonso sits a tantalising 17 points behind Pizzonia and 10 points here could give him a chance to fight for the title once again.

Joining him on the front row is Montoya, who has seen his Championship challenge fade, but is still in the race for the title. 3rd on the grid is Michael Schumacher, out of the title race but needing the points to avoid another season in last place. Alongside him is Pizzonia, who is in prime position to edge himself away from Barrichello and Fisichella, after they qualified 13th and 20th respectively.

5th is Button and he has had a terrible season this time around after being a regular Championship contender. 6th is Baumgartner, still in the hunt to being the first driver to defend his title. 7th is Raikkonen, getting used to having average seasons in the McLaren and 8th is Firman, which is good news for his Championship challenge and Jordan's hopes of taking the Constructors Championship.

Full Qualifying Results:

So, after the 4th wet qualifying in 4 years of SR F1, it was race time and the conditions were just as bad, at some points worse than qualifying. The race got underway and the key thing off the line was to stay on the track. Alonso held onto the lead off the line and with a few minor changes, everyone managed to get through the first lap.

However, it was lap 3 when it all kicked off. Michael Schumacher in 3rd place spins off the track and crashes out, leaving him to ponder whether he'll have a drive next season. That same lap also saw Alonso surrender the lead after an error and Montoya now led.

Onto lap 4 and Montoya throws away the lead handing it on a plate to Championship leader Pizzonia and Montoya slipped to the back. Salo was retirement number 2 when he crashed off camera on lap 4. Button made it 3 on lap 5 when he smashed into the tyre barriers.

The retirements kept coming as Baumgartner's engine blew on lap 7, seriously denting his Championship challenge. Raikkonen was next out when he suffered electrical problems on lap 9 whilst in the points. Also out on lap 9 was Panis with transmission problems, really struggling after his Championship year in 2002.

Pizzonia still had the lead as he saw another Championship contenders race end, but this time he wouldn't have wanted to see it happen. Barrichello developed a throttle problem and managed to stop the car before causing a potentially dangerous accident on lap 18. This was obviously not good news for Renault.

7 retirements became 8 when Heidfeld crashed out on lap 21. 8 then became 9 as Ralf Schumacher retired with an engine problem on lap 31. That same lap saw Verstappen overtake Pizzonia to take the lead and give hope to the Championship chasers.

De La Rosa made it 10 retirements in the race when his car developed an oil fire on 38. The race was on as Verstappen, Pizzonia and Alonso were fighting for the top 3 places and trying to keep their cars on the road. Verstappen was pulling away only for a slight mistake closing the gap once again. Alonso overtook Pizzonia for 2nd but a mistake let him back through but Pizzonia then threw that away to give Alonso 2nd again.

It was heartbreak for yet another Championship challenger as Fisichella, driving in a credible 5th place, saw his engine blow on lap 48, only 3 laps from the end.

Would that be crucial for the Championship? We don't know yet but the race finished with Verstappen taking career win number 2 and his 1st of 2005. He kept his cool and held off Alonso, who takes 2nd place. Pizzonia takes the final podium place for 3rd and with his main challengers both failing to finish, let alone score points, he must now be favourite to win his 1st World Championship.

4th was Karthikeyan, which takes him off the bottom of the table. 5th was Montoya, who will be kicking himself for what could have been potential victory. Klien survived the wreckage to come from last on the grid to 6th, Sato takes 7th for the 2nd race in a row and Villeneuve's scrappy afternoon somehow turned itself into a point for 8th. Only 11 cars finished.

PREDICTION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

7 predictors this week so the points system this time around is 10 for 1st, 8 for 2nd, 6 for 3rd, 5 for 4th, 4 for 5th, 3 for 6th, 2 for 7th and a bonus point for being closest to the tie breaker. Here are the results:

1st Chris 10pts (19pts - +9.536s)
2nd Shadow 8pts (17pts - +10.281s)
3rd Shelljed 6pts (17pts)
4th Ineedsleep 5pts (15pts - +10.572s)
5th Badgerman 4pts (9pts - +10.219s)
6th Biggie Little 3pts (7pts - +10.113s)
7th Foreman 2pt + 1pt (6pts - +9.107s) - THE CLOSEST

The table looks like this after Round 17: (Names in bold cannot win the Championship)

1st Chris 104pts (6 wins)
2nd Shadow 96pts (3 wins)
3rd Ineedsleep 78pts (2 wins)
4th Shelljed 74pts (3 wins)
5th Badgerman 66pts (1 win)
6th Jae 59pts (2 wins)
7th Icarus 33pts
8th Biggie Little 23pts
9th Foreman 22pts
10th Jules 12pts
11= Notorious Biggles 5pts
11= Clazon 5pts
13th Shrimper 2pts

Only 2 rounds remain. That leaves a maximum of 20 points for the drivers and predictors to fight over and 36 maximum for the Constructors.

Pizzonia's 6 points eliminated 9 drivers and now only 6 have a mathematical chance of becoming World Champion. Failure to score enough points at Round 18 for 5 of the 6 drivers could see the Championship land into Pizzonia's camp. Only 4 teams can now win the Constructors Championship but the odds heavily favour Renault now and it will be a successful defense of their title. In the Prediction Championship, it's down to just 2, with Chris 8 points ahead of Shadow. 2 points more than Shadow in the next round will see Chris take the title.

The results of the poll was:

Britain - Round 18 - Wet
Monaco - Round 19 - Wet

That means that Silverstone is the next race and it will be wet conditions for both qualifying and race.

Careful! That sounds like the 'Dick Dastardly' school of race winning. :)

Now that is an idea. Tacks thrown around the starting grid and lots of acme glue spread across a tight corner. Of course knowing about, and how to avoid, these pitfalls I'd win easy :)

I finally appear right towards the end of the season, go me!

After not bothering to go on here in ages for various reasons I find Button is doing pretty damn badly in the championship, and of course I'm nowhere in predicitions as I wasn't around for ages... damn.

I surrender my championshippery, someone leave an address where I can send the whacking great trophies to and break some poor sod at Royal Mail's back!

First time Montoya has picked up points in this in a long time, as far as I can remember.

Was hoping after 2nd in qualification, though, things could have been better in the race. :-(
