Qualifying: Pantano in control in tricky conditions
Race: Villeneuve gives Ferrari something to cheer about

Giorgio Pantano took pole position for the USA Grand Prix in wet and changeable conditions. Pantano is only 21 points behind Pizzonia and his 2nd career pole position will give him hope of taking the Championship. Funnily enough, Pantano's only other pole position was here in the USA last year.

Pantano shares the front row with Villeneuve in the Ferrari. Ferrari sit at the bottom of the Championship but 3rd for Michael Schumacher in the last race and the driver with the most wins in SR F1 history sitting on the front row must be a sign that things might be changing.

3rd is Mark Webber alongside the man of the 2nd half of the season, Heidfeld. Button has to win every race from here to the end of the season to stand any chance of winning the Championship and he starts 5th. Alonso's great form continues with 6th on the grid. Minardi lock out the 4th row with Verstappen in 7th and Baumgartner in 8th.

Barrichello has the slight advantage over his teammate, as he starts 10th. Pizzonia won't be too worried though as Fisichella starts 20th and Firman starts 22nd, meaning good news for Renault. Pizzonia will start 13th.

So, the tension is beginning to mount as I'm certain that we will be starting to lose drivers who can win the Drivers Championship at the end of this round and the destination of the title becomes a bit clearer.

The race is go in perfect racing conditions and Villeneuve gets the lead from Pantano off the start and starts to scamper away with Pantano struggling for pace with a high fuel load. Everyone was on their best behaviour for the first 20 laps, with only a few potential accidents averted and the locking of brakes on occasion.

However, on lap 21, Pantano and Barrichello were battling for 3rd place. Barrichello got alongside and had the inside into turn 1. Pantano tried to fend him off but pushed too hard and spun. It left him wide open on the track and Heidfeld was the unlucky one as he ploughed into Pantano. Verstappen also crashed into Pantano. Amazingly, Pantano survived but his race for points was over as he needed a new front wing. Verstappen needed a new front wing too but Heidfeld had broken suspension and a damaged wheel and his race was over.

This was indeed a bizarre race as there was no incidents at all for over 40 laps. Everyone got through their pit stops cleanly and the race was on for the line. Villeneuve had a comfortable lead at this point and Barrichello was getting held up in 4th place.

Onto lap 69, 4 laps to go, De La Rosa retired with a transmission problem but he wasn't on for any points. Barrichello easily had the fastest car at this point and he easily worked his way into 3rd at the expense of Baumgartner. Villeneuve was just beginning to cruise at this point.

Final lap and Verstappen, not going to score any points after his front wing change, retired with left front wheel damage. This just left the race to the line and it was Villeneuve that came through to win, controlling the race and holding off Button in 2nd with a comfortable margin.

Villeneuve's victory is his first of the season, his 7th in his career (2 more than anyone else) and only Ferrari's 2nd ever victory. Button's valiant attempt to keep his Championship hopes alive have been snuffed out by his failure to win but 2nd place here takes him off the bottom of the Drivers Championship.

3rd place was Barrichello, who now ties with Fisichella for 2nd in the Drivers Championship and puts real pressure on his teammate Pizzonia, who scored no points. 4th was Baumgartner and he has a chance of retaining the Championship, as he is now 11 points behind Pizzonia with 3 rounds to go. 5th was Webber and Alonso edges a bit nearer with 6th. Sato scores a couple of points for 7th but he is now out of the Championship race. Salo completes the top 8.

The table looks like this after Round 16: (Names in bold cannot win the Championship)

1st Chris 94pts (5 wins)
2nd Shadow 88pts (3 wins)
3rd Ineedsleep 73pts (2 wins)
4th Shelljed 68pts (3 wins) - (Up 1)

9th Foreman 19pts
10th Jules 12pts
11= Notorious Biggles 5pts
11= Clazon 5pts
13th Shrimper 2pts

Round 16 of 19 completed, 3 to go and we are no nearer to finding out the destination of the Championship but we have lost a number of drivers and predictors. 7 of the 22 drivers can no longer win the Drivers Championship and all but 4 predictors remain in the Prediction Championship race. All the teams in the Constructors Championship are in the race, just about.

Pizzonia remains in front but there are now 2 drivers just 7 points away from him. Renault push the gap between them and Jordan back to 18 points from 12 points with Barrichello's 3rd place and Chris is now just 6 points ahead of Shadow, which was 11 before this round.

Round 17 is in Japan and that leaves just 30 points for both the drivers and the predictors to fight for. Only 54 points remain for the teams in the Constructors Championship.

Ooh-er, I had a peek at the archives and saw that this has been going on since 2001/02.

So is this the 4th season we're on now?

I would expect someone to point out the fact that I had missed something and besides would not be the same if I won by gaining the 5 points and I knew I had not been fair.

Of course if the winner got 100 grand then perhaps I might have had a different attitude :D
