Why so soon? The PS2 has plenty of life left in it and will happily last until PS3. Despite being released later, X-Box seems unable to last - is this not a bad sign for the 360? 4.5 years doesn't seem enough time to get ready for the next jump. It might be fine to release a new version of windows every ten minutes, but I'm not convinced when it comes to consoles.
This isn't supposed to provoke a console war about which is better, since I guess we won't really know for sure that PS3 is better for a little while yet :D
All I'm saying is that I don't agree with the timing. I'll happily sit here and enjoy the many games on PS2 I really want to finish but haven't had time for yet and gently prepare for the proper next generation.
P.S. PS3 iz GONA B WEL BETR!!11111!!!!!
As for PS3 in Spring that's surely just the Japanese launch yes? It'll be at least Christmas by the time it reaches us I'd guess, by which time the last few great titles will have trickled out and people will be itching to buy a new machine.
The step to HD is being made in America and Asia, so the move to HD gaming there is a logical step.
It's too soon in Europe because HD isn't here yet, but if it was, the timing would be perfect. Next year, there will be HD sky, NTL and Telewest starting to come out, people with money will be getting those, hi-def Tvs and other spangly kit to show off, and until the PS3 arrives, the only way to play games in High def on your brand new TV will be an Xbox 360 or a Media Centre PC.
Microsoft is gambling on people giving reviews on Media Centre PCs and Xbox 360 link-ups to show that's the way to go in home entertainment, not just gaming. MS needs to find new ways to generate new revenues and income, and this is their plan.
I do think MS are being a little too rushy with it all though. It just gives Sony a better chance of trumping the 360 in places where people find complaints - like the requirement of a remote to play DVDs. Why they've gone for that method again, I don't know.
