Yeah that’s what I thought, as all GBA stuff from the UK works on my USA GBA.
And yes the DS will be backlit. It has 2 LCD screens which is like having 2 TV screens.

I also am definitely getting Mario Kart, Advance Wars DS, Super Mario Bros, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and maybe Metroid Prime Hunters (I’ll have a look at the demo) and Yoshi's Touch & Go (I need more info before I decide on this one).

Yoshi's Touch and Go is that Baby Mario tech demo turned into a full game. basically its the cloud drawing thing added to some yoshi platforming things. Could be great, could be rubbish.
