You'll have to pay for Aftermath, it's a full blown expansion and I think EA will be distributing it.
However, Valve are releasing a new episode of Half Life 2 for free called The Lost Coast which showcases some amazing lighting effects. You'll only be able to get it if you computer is up to the task of running it though.

3 1/2 ghz and 2GB ram last I heard, with high end gfx card (natch).
