I don't see why there can't be two completely separate competitions on this forum. One for the more literary efforts (1000-1500 words, say) from people hoping to improve their writing skills, and one for shorter scraps of fiction (400-800 words maybe), off-the-cuff writing, and general drivel (CrossBob).
You must be a terrible writer if you can't come up with anything with that as a stimulus.
Tell you what, if it's so hard then ignore the stimulus and just do a decent little story in 400 words or less.

Fair point. And I wasn't fair, the few users we have could be hidden away, furiously scribing brilliant 400 word snippets on fish paste.

An option many people seem to be taking you up on.
If you can't do something skillful in 400 words then don't bother.
