Why in Harry Potter do they have a 'house' named after someone who was evil, then they put all the evil-looking kids in it? Surely that'll give them a complex?

I read about half of the first book when all the fuss started and just wasn't interested in at all, wasn't a fan of her writing style either.
Because they are for children.

"Harry opened the window and it was sunny and the sun was warm on Harry's face and he liked the sun and it was windy and he liked that too so he went downstairs to go out in the sun and the wind and then he got a letter from an owl and he opened the letter and he read the letter and the letter was from a magic school" etc etc

Nope, I really don't. Amateurish pish-pash, I've tried them before.

"You broke all the school rules and endangered the lives of dozens of kids, so I'm deducting 5 points. But you brought me my slippers and pipe, 1 million points for young Mr Potter, and no exams this year for all!"

Whimsy.

Is that because if you really, really believe in Harry Potter, then you'll start to fly? Also, if you shut the book quickly enough, it counts as clapping your hands and another wizard comes back to life.

On a similar note, I got dragged along to last year's Potter (with Gary Oldman). Now, Mr Oldman, fantastic as a bad guy if you ask me (particularly liked him in Leon), turned out to be *doubtful spoiler* a good guy, despite the manic expressions he put on when receiving his prisoner id photos and despite the fact that he would have made a far better enemy than any of the muppets before him. Why...?

I shall try very hard not to be dragged to the next one.
