I'm working on a new website. Design isn't my strength, but this is my biggest ever site by a factor two, so I wanna make it good. I've done two designs so far (the odd bit of tweaking still needed here and there) and I'm looking for ideas.

I need to have a main menu and a submenu in each case - which is why I have a main menu and a submenu on both (see, cunning!). Also, all the photos are going to be thumbnailed on the sidebar of each page rather than embedded in the page - don't ask, it's a long story.

Anyway, onions please:

www.ksdev.ath.cx:1234/Starr/website/1.php
www.ksdev.ath.cx:1234/Starr/website/2.php

They're not links for a reason, so please don't post back with links. Also, they're running off my PC, and as such won't be available when my PC isn't on - it's usually turned on between around 9am and 11pm or thereabouts.

Cheers peeps.

I know the feeling - I find blue an easy colour to work with, and struggle with green a lot.

Nope, there's no way. Best option is to do the ugly background hack (ie. have an image that repeats all the way down to create the illusion of 2 full length colums. I guess you could have that within a container div which holds both the columns, if you want to preserve your existing background.)

Have to say I'm not mad about the design either. Just... Doesn't work, in my opinion - especially the green. I dunno.

Possibly. I might have a play around with that later.

Also, does anyone know how I can ensure that the dark green left menu bar and the main page content are always the same length? In firefox the menu bar is slightly shorter, and in IE, it just doesn't work at all.

What do you think about using the 'pagebg.gif' image for the content background, and adjusting the text colour?

I'm not too bad with layouts, but I have difficulty making them look professional - it tends to be the little touches like small graphics and subtle background images that I can't do well.

My concern with both of the designs is that they are too dark, but my client wants it to be very green - that's their colour.

I'd go for the first one personally, simply because the top menu looks out of place on design 2, where as design 1 fits nicely (or so I think). Also, design 2 places the content lower down the page than design 1 (because of the way the menu is placed), and personally I prefer as much main content on screen without having to scroll right away.

You say that design isn't your strength, but you seem to come up with some pretty good layouts.

Tried to have a look, but it seems your PC is off, so I'll try again later.

You sure those links work from external web?

Looks like the browser needs to find www.ksdev.ath.cx ...

Perhaps an IP rather than a name for external, no?
