It's been a while, folks. But you guys seem to know lots of computer related things.
Been thinking about buying a laptop computer for a while now, and was wondering what you all might recommend. I've got about £700 exc. VAT, which I appreciate isn't a vast sum, but I'm not looking for the king of all notebooks here. Just something to while away the hours.
In my research, I've found Acer's and Tiny's to be the best value, with Tiny cheaper but with a less impressive service record, and Acer better quality but marginally more expensive. PC World just can't leave the Celeron M on anything lower than a grand and Dell insists on 40Gb HDD as standard, charging silly sums for upgrades.
So, if anyone knows of any good deals, or has any helpful suggestions, I'd appreciate it. As a kind of minimum, the spec I'd like is :
Intel Centrino (Or equivalent) 1.6Ghz +
60Gb+ Hard drive
512Mb RAM
15" Screen
ATi Mobility Graphics 128mb (Or equivalent)
DVD+RW drive
Wi-fi ready
Firewire & USB2 ports + 'Standard' connectivity (LAN etc)
So...thoughts?

It's a student house, both times they've been broken into. My housemate had his stolen from a guy forcing open the front door lock while I was in the house. I came downstairs to meet a random guy running out of the front door.
I know a group of girls who were burgled, the girls opposite us were also burgled. Another guy had his house burgled while he was held at knifepoint downstairs.
My mate who's in London said the people opposite had a stray bullet fly through their window and another guy had a gun pulled out on him when he was walking back home one night. He was frogmarched to 3 different cash machines until they found one that worked, he then had to withdraw all he could and the guy ran off with it.
All fun and games. Just wait until you're in student housing...

You could get yourself a really sexy desktop for £700 and have some money left over. If you are actually going to get a laptop buy it just before you go to university not before the gap year as you can get a better laptop. 1.6ghz is just a pile of ass.

Haha. In the "What a new student should think about" guide, the first thing that comes to mind is a laptop. After all, YOU NEED A LAPTOP for uni. Taking a subject that doesn't need computer use often? Forget it, YOU NEED A LAPTOP.
Current PC feeling a bit slow? There are some excellent desktops, many which are portable (Shuttles) but - wait - YOU NEED A LAPTOP. Why? Because you're a goddamn student. Hell yeah!
Buy a Powerbook.

My brother's had his at uni for the last year, with no problems. And a desktop isn't terribly practical, what with the old gap year and all. I treasure my electrical stuff probably more so than certain family members.
I'll be picking up a hi-spec desktop when I return, for all those yummy nex-nex-gen games that will have hopefully appeared.

Laptops get stolen a LOT at uni, that's all they're good for. Otherwise you'll find a desktop is just as good and far cheaper/better.
My mate has had his stolen twice now, both from breakins. He's got a desktop now.

Partly as something handy for university, partly because my current PC ain't up to much, partly for something to run heavier programs a bit faster without being tied to a desk. I would go for something more powerful, but I haven't the money as I've a gap year to fund.
EDIT : Also quite like to have it for easier connection of games consoles to the Net, and music fun-ness
