After the disaster that was Jeffers, and the disappointment of Rhommedhal -(only spelt differently) Curbishly certainly seems to be spending more wisely this season.

Bent will hopefully do well up front (he's been great for England u21s and Ipswich), and Smertin and Ambrose in midfield sound to me like a couple of decent signings. Ambrose always looked decent when he came on for Newcastle, but he didn't get enough of a chance under Souness.

Powell came back, even though he's like 100, and they've got Jonathan Spector on loan from Man Utd. Hopefully his mullet will be in full bloom next season.

I don't mind Charlton - a largely inoffensive team (no pun intended) but I thought at the end of last season they could struggle this one if they kept the same squad,a nd got off to a poor start. I'm beginning to think I might be wrong. Chances are they'll do the traditional getting to 45 points then stop turning up though, but with that squad they must have an outside chance of Europe, and could do alright in the cups.

They do seem to have a good midfield to pick from now. Rommendahl was looking sharper at the end of last season, Matty Holland is a quality player, Smertin is also good and of course, Danny Murphy (who I wish was still at Liverpool). Danny had a stormer of a season once he got going, he'll be Charlton's key man.

Ambrose is a bit of a waster though. Never seen anything good about him, at all. They don't really need him.

Not even that goal he scored against Bolton (I think it was them)? That was qual.

I didn't see that goal, and therefore stand by my statement that Ambrose is awful. Nunez awful. Well, maybe not that bad. But close.

They've got Sorondo on loan, I've just realised. The mighty Gonzalo, he's a comedy defender.

Just realised Smertin is 31.

I guess Charlton is a place where footballers go to die, well, before Qatar atleast.

Ambrose is a quality signing. Great ability on the ball. Speed. Vision. Good attitude. Can pass well. Tries the odd shot. Tidy player. Good midfielder.
