Qualifying: Alonso shows his qualifying credentials
Race: The World Champion finally finds his feet

Fernando Alonso took pole position for the German Grand Prix, blitzing the lap record and beating World Champion Baumgartner into 2nd. This is Alonso's 1st of the season and his 4th career pole position in 29 attempts, which is the best strike rate in SR F1.

Alonso was the only driver to go under 1 minute 38 but Baumgartner in 2nd and Sato in 3rd both beat the old lap record mark as well. Barrichello is on a charge with half his points total coming in the last 3 rounds and he starts 4th. De La Rosa and Salo give MG a lockdown of row 3 with 5th and 6th. Montoya has lost momentum in recent races and has lost his 2nd place in the Championship but 7th on the grid and Pizzonia only in 17th will please him. Verstappen completes the top 8.

Full Qualifying Results:

22nd M Schumacher (Vampyr) 1m39.134s - (+1.142s)

Perfect conditions for both qualifying and the race means that the drivers will have to have good cars underneath them to overtake others on a track where overtaking is relatively easy with long straights and big braking zones.

Baumgartner gets the jump past Alonso as they went into the first corner together. Pizzonia was light fueled so he could do some overtaking but he was in trouble early on when he was forced off the track on the first lap.

Pantano ran wide on lap 2 and lost a lot of time and De La Rosa had a scary off on lap 3 while in the points places. Villeneuve had off the track excursions on laps 3 and 4 at the same place on the track. Firman also had a moment on lap 4 when he spun.

The race settled down after that with Barrichello now in 2nd only managing to hold the gap to Baumgartner to around 1-2 seconds. The first round of pit stops then started being made which put Salo in the lead. That didn't last very long as Salo retired on lap 15 when his engine blew up. Just half a lap later, De La Rosa's MG suffered a transmission problem and retired, both MG's suffering failures on the same lap.

Button was the next retirement when he pushed too hard and crashed into the wall on lap 18. Button's race form has deserted him so far this season which must be disappointing considering he was runner up in the Drivers Championship last season.

Alonso started the race in pole position and was on a different strategy. He was sitting in the lead on lap 24 when his right rear wheel worked loose and he was forced into retirement. Karthikeyan had an off on lap 30 but his teammate, Webber, suffered a worse fate when his engine blew on lap 35.

There was a bizarre going on in the Williams pit area when Montoya on lap 21 and Sato on lap 26 both came into the pit lane to retire with no obvious problems.

By this time, any sort of decent form in the race would have been in or around the points. Ralf Schumacher was one of those in the points but he crashed in the same place as Button to retire on lap 38. Fisichella was also comfortably in the points when on lap 41, with just 4 to go, his transmission failed and his race was over.

It was all pretty comfortable at the front for Baumgartner, who had the pace to hold off Barrichello and take his first win of the 2005 season, his 3rd career victory, to get Baumgartner back in the title picture. Barrichello didn't have the pace to get near Baumgartner but 2nd place in Germany gives him 8 points and he is now tied for 2nd in the Drivers Championship. Although Alonso had the quicker McLaren throughout the weekend, Raikkonen was the one to score the points, as he took 3rd place.

Heidfeld has a habit of scoring a lot of points in the second half of the season. He came from 19th on the grid all the way up to 4th place and 5 valuable points. Panis has qualifying troubles for the majority of races in the Toyota but 4 more points for 5th shows steady race pace, something sorely lacking in previous seasons. Verstappen keeps his points tally ticking over with 6th place, Michael Schumacher comes from last on the grid to take 7th place and Pizzonia somehow managed to scrape a point for 8th place and salvage something from the weekend.

The stuff in brackets is your prediction score and how close you are to the tie breaker. If you look at the prediction questions, you will see how many points are up for grabs for each question. Usually, the harder the question, the more points on offer.

A) Damn there being no tie-breaker. *second would have given me a reason to moan, so I may aswell use it up like this*
:D

B) Why is the number of points in the brackets disregarded, and the one outside used? I don't see the points inside the brackets going anywhere?

The points in the brackets are only to determine the round winner. In this case, Shadow scored 19 points beating Ineedsleep on 18 points. That means Shadow gets 10 points for winning the round, Ineedsleep 2nd and gets 8 points, 3rd gets 6 points and so on.
